++1 to Monger ,
Why the hell BSNL takes two steps back with every step forward , we are getting 1 mbps ul for 1800 from airtel already . Reading this topic I thought now 10 mbit will be affordable (read 3-4k) but fracking 3k for 1 mbit , stupid asshats at BSNL . :mad:

If 1mbps using FTTH costs 3k and same same with normal DSL costs ~1.6k, who the hell is going to buy this FTTH?!

I thought they will be offering Minimum 10mbps ultd connection costing around Rs.2k!

Now this is as usual a big disappointment from BSNL .

Every now or then ISP's in India come up with new technologies & advertise it innovatively to customers. But their charges are high as hell.. the reason they cite is last mile connectivity...

Why the hell they don't concentrate on making existing technology & implementation affordable...:mad:

ADSL can support speeds upto 24mbps downloads and 3.5Upstream with some changes. if present Line conditions are taken into consideration, our present Bsnl Broadband connections can get support speed of 6-8mbps downloads and 2mbps uploads.

still we are stuck a such low speeds. in short, we aren't fully utilizing the capacity of provided by current tech:(

the new fibre technology is more useful only for stuff like VOIP and IPTV. internet would very costly due to high bandwidth costs in india.

Anyways, its a start! Hopefully prices will come down in near future as they did with broadband:hap2:

Actually bandwidth costs have dropped rock bottom. 1 MB IVPN connections are down to about 80 K.

Fiber that they seem to be talking about generally costs quite a bit. Unlike regular copper links if a fiber is cut (believe me it happens very often), it costs quite a bit of to get it spliced once again.

I also doubt that penetration is going to happen quickly. Laying fiber to ones door step would mean a lot of digging.
