I want to find out the SATA capability of my laptop. How to do it?

SATA II 100%. Also telling us about the northbridge is not going to be of any use, as the southbridge, ICH8M/E in this case, is the chip with the SATA ports.

i have sony vaio vpceb34en which has intel hm55 express chipset..
is it sata 1/2/3??

I have upgraded mine with 64GB Kingston SSD. 220 Mbps read speed
Try the Sandralite and see if it helps from SiSoftware Zone
