Need Explanation About "steam"

I heard some downloader or some backup facility from VALVE called STEAM through one of my friends and i dono wat the hell he is talking to me ..... I kept mum out there ...CAME HERE FOR SOME EXPLANATION .............

well steam is basically a software that you need to play games that valve releases or are in collaboration with them.
