Does anybody know of any real world applications that use direct compute or Open CL ? (basically GPGPU technology) I've tried a little on google and the only thing I could come up with is Adobe Air and Flash. Does anyone know any real world applications other than games that use MS Direct Compute or Open CL ?

Very few consumer grade apps at the moment. The GPGPU market is currently mostly restricted to proprietary custom environments.
The little consumer grade usage is currently in A/V decoding area, gaming and distributed computing ( this is one area making full use of the grunt offered by GPUs ). It will change a bit in next couple of years if AMD actually stays committed to follow the path it has chosen with the APUs (Intel as well if their future plans are taken into consideration).
There are few developers right here on TE who are working with GPGPU to power cloud computing projects, but no real consumer grade applications other than what I have mentioned.
