Is it wise buying the nokia N8 now?

Since i have collected 18k, now i am looking to buy a mobile. I am seriously considering the N8. I dont care about apps and games since my itouch 4g is there to fill this gap. I want a phone for-

1) Browsing

2) Camera

3) Good design [Must]

4) Good build quality

5) Can handle basic stuffs like listening to music, messaging, watching occational videos etc.

6) Dont care about apps and games

and please dont suggest me any phones bove 3.7" since my hands are small and they look awkward. OS doesnt matters whether its Symbian or Android

Thanks,

Souvik Roy

Except for the first point, you won't be disappointed AT ALL. The browsing experience on this phone is good but not as good as competition. But the camera is just awesome (also you can't beat xenon flash) and overall multimedia features are one of the best.

As anfavid said, apps are less compared to iOS or android. But it's not your priority anyway. And even word processing app won't be an issue in few months as S^3 will get Microsoft Office + Lync as a free update.

its still the best cam mobile out there..and browsing i guess opera mini takes care of it too....the battery is quite good too...lasts my heavy duty usage for a day. Though i think the screen brightness and vividness is a tad less compared to the samsungs and the HTC's plus it has almost all the features /options that you would want in a mobile phone. i have been using this for a quite a few days now and i think the replacement i would consider for this would be the motorola razr maxx!!(Android with battery backup,,,that sounds tempting!!!!)...now i am going OT here...;P

Imho, it's one of the best phones I've ever used. If you are getting it for cheap, in good condition, then go for it. I still use it as a backup at times. Nokia ka bharosa, I say!

Dude the symbian ^3 is pretty much obsolete now. If you're going to get nokia, get one with the symbian belle OS. But I would never go for a nokia, Im an android fanboy so Ill always pick up an android and personally I think android kicks symbians as*! Speed, browsing, OS, Apps etc and better on the android in most situations. An xperia neo v would be much better that an n8. If you're taking nokia, symbian belle is the best one to get...

Good Luck.

YES ! N8 seriously fits in your requirements . I would say wait as nokia said it's gonna ship new N8s with belle OS .

Also you need not worry about build quality afterall it's nokia .

I would say go for it .

Quality wise, N8 does not have best camera. Not anymore.

It does have better set of camera related features like the guided focus, but as far as out and out picture quality goes, its not the best phone. It was not the best last year as well.

N8 gets lots of praises for its camera capabilities, and as a piece of engineering, its fantastic piece of camera hardware let down by Nokia's choice for compression ratio to store images.

The Jpeg compression used by Nokia is very aggressive. This means the image picture size is relatively small. This directly results in degraded image quality. There are multiple phones out there today that will take better quality pictures in most conditions (except dark environments where N8 shines ). This includes Galaxy S2, Note, SL, Wave 3 and almost all current HTC lineup phones in this price range have excellent cameras. They might have lower resolution sensor but they capture more details than what N8 produces thanks to its compression.

The only thing that N8 really has going for itself is usual bullet proof built quality and that xenon flash and lamp assisted focus when its dark. If you can let go of those, in most conditions you will get better snaps from the phones I have mentioned even though they will have lower MP count. All of them are better and more modern phones than N8.

i'm inclined towards N8 too, for its camera but i game too, so should i buy this phone considering i want a gaming phone (and seriously, a good camera) and don't care about apps as all the popular apps make their way to symbian..

i was actually looking for an android but after using e71, i just can't use those plasticky phones.. i mean, spending 15-18k for that build-quality isn't convincing for me..

Really?

I agree with you on compression on N8 but it's not at all as bad as you are making it sound...

They do,

Have you used any of them.

Even age old HD2 nad DHD has fantastic camera, though not as good all round performer as SGS2 or Note or N8. But most 20k+ HTC phones have snappers capable of taking some quality pictures as far as mobile phone cameras go.

And N8 compression is bad. Its really bad. It looks great on phone and great on screen when its cropped. But make it 100% and you see the flaw of this phone.

I am not saying this just to say it. I have personally done the tests and even posted them here on TE last year with comparison with other phones like SGS2. N8 totally washes out details.

The worst thing in this industry is hype. Its same story with iPhone 4. People used to go uuuuu ahhh over its pictures when in reality it had very bad sharpning filter and completely inaccurate colours (4s fixed that to large extent). But people simply would not acknowledge that (here on the forums specially.)

I still have N8, HD2, Note and iPhone 4S with me. I can do the tests again when I get time over coming weekend. But that wont change these facts. Compared to what is available in the market today, N8 image quality is nothing special.

Here is the link to my old post where I did direct comparison between N8 and SGS2.

There specially look at the second picture. Look at the fins of graphics card heatsinks towards right hand side. Perfect example of loss of details in N8. They get washed out and looks like a blurr. SGS2 captures individual fins and more details.
