Torn between Android and WP

Till a month ago I was almost going to buy a Sony Neo V, completely in love with ICS, Android's Latest iteration, which removed any doubts between it and Symbian Belle on the Nokia 701.

But now, this stupid thing called Windows Phone is winning me over, and Lumia 710 and Omnia W look so good, the UI, the black background with white text, the amazing style and fonts, the minimalistic approach, it's so elegant.

..... aaargh I'm gonna go crazy!

Windows phone is lacking some of the cool features (basic) of android.

You will miss file browser, bluetooth transfer, third party apps, support for various formats of video, maps and mass storage mode.

however there are some registry fixes to some of features and an google maps ported app for maps.

My friend is having having Omnia W. Man its super smooth and nice UI.

Are you aware of the major flaws of WP7?

No USB Storage, Not much customisation, No File Manager, Less Apps. If you can live with all that, then theres no reason why you shouldn't get a WP.

Don't let colours and fonts sway your decision, hundreds of apps are available to modify the look of your android(something like Go Launcher)

If you like the UI then I suggest you try out the phone somewhere and if you like it over ICS then buy it.

The flaws that members above have mentioned are there, but then again not everyone needs them, depends on your usage, I couldn't imagine life without a file browser, my dad on the other hand would have no idea what it is

Go for the Omnia W , sweet phone.. As for the lacking file manager n bluetooth file transfers. Cloud is the future , embrace it
<
Nah.. on a serious note , just look at your usage for 10 days and make a note of how many times you use bluetooth / file manager to transfer stuff when out n about. If it is often , then skip WP7. Each platform has their strengths and WP7 really is starting off great. Love it

Try Android app launcher 7 ... It brings tiles to Android with support for widgets as well...

I love the plethora of free Android apps, so opted for Android with launcher 7 for tiles :)

For general usage the only thing I miss the most on WP7 is the lack of multi-tasking. You may not get the exact app that you will get on Android (specifics like bookmyshow and all) but then you do have an app for most of your needs.

And I suggest you stay away from Xperia Neo-V as the screen is real bad as compared to the AMOLEDs. So do compare it side by side with another phone before buying.

I know file manager is coming with Tango

<
Is it confirmed? I doubt this

BookMyShow is available on WP7

comp@ddict,

IMO, wait for 2nd Gen Nokia phones. I am sure there will be new models within next 2-3 months within 20k which have more memory storage, front camera etc

bookmyshow is better on WP7 than on android.

You will miss file browser, bluetooth transfer, third party apps, support for various formats of video, maps and mass storage mode

the use of file browser being? i can browse my photos, music, videos, documents in the OS as of now, i don't know what else i am missing to browse?

bluetooth transfer - yes, this is a miss; but this is only useful when you want to use it to transfer to a legacy phone which doesn't have internet connection. they should allow transfer of photos at least. Music can be argued for piracy.

videos - zune transcodes everything, dunno why this is even mentioned as a drawback

maps - gmaps pro, nokia maps, bing maps, lots of map application..

mass storage mode - again, i haven't missed it yet.

About the number of apps, marketplace has more than 60k.. is it really possible for anyone to install anything more than 200 apps let alone thousands of apps!!!

^^ Exactly this. After a point the number of apps available question really gets pointless. I'm sure you'll find what you need in 60k apps... and this number is only going to grow.

Well, I'm not that much into mobile gaming as well.

So if Tango update brings with it BT transfer and lower priced phones, say 3.5" and all that, if Lumia 710 can be 14k, I think they can go to about 10-12k also.

I would happily jump gun then

maps - gmaps pro, nokia maps, bing maps, lots of map application..
Good that you mentioned it. Prime example of a missing app. None of these apps are as good as google maps. So if one is ready to make a compromise on features and usability then there is an app for everything.

i guess Nokia Drive is better than google maps as its an offline navigation app, and as nokia+WP7 get decent marketshare this year, i am sure apps like google maps etc will showup on the marketplace, just like the launch of many india specifc apps in the last one month: http://www.techenclave.com/topic/485724-the-windows-phone-7-thread/page__st__280

Just yesterday I was frustrated because I can't use Whats App properly due to the fact that WP7 does not support multitasking and background apps. Just reinforces my earlier point, if you are ready to compromise on the user experience to some extent then WP7 is a good platform to own.

I like my WP7 phone a lot but not a week passes by when I wonder whether I should jump back to Android.

gMaps pro is there for WP7, its just a copy of Google Maps as far as i have used it
Then you have not used it extensively. It does not cache the maps from last use. Even if I switch to other apps and open gmaps again, it has to download from scratch.

The implementation of Latitude is patchy at best. It is not as user friendly or as google maps. Not to mention the lack of multitasking which makes this functionality useless for practical purpose.
