Hi TE folks,

I am looking forward to searching for the best Best Z68 Gen3 ATX Board & hoping to pair it off with i7-2600K.

For the moment - the Asus P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 is under consideration (Rs 15k) & I can't seem to figure out the Gigabyte ones. My obvious choice would have been ASRock - however, I cannot find a good model available in India (lastly RMA & support here is doubtful?).

Initially, planning to use the onboard GPU support. Will add a discrete GPU 3-4 months later. Will be installing 16GB RAM & using Seasonic 520W PSU. Used mainly for HD encoding; Avid DS Nitris; Maya (rare & occassional). Also planning on OC later on (after changing the stock CPU cooler) and adding an SSD. Also will keep adding 1 or 2TB HDD's to serve as my library for HD Movies & other work. In short - looking at a system that will keep me relaxed for the next 5-6 years.

Ideally the X79 would have been my dream, but the combined cost of the mobo & proc exceeding 60K is beyond my reach. So settling for Z68 Gen3 board.

Appreciate all the help u guys can give & links too

Cheers

Get the Gene. Its a great overclocker and will also be one of the Z68 boards to continue to recieve bios and program updates for a while for sure.

Proved to be a great board, as good as the full size ROG for single/dual card use.

Just hang on. The Z77 boards are just around the corner. A month will get you a newer, better chipset.

?????

Are you refering to the Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z ? But this is not a PCIe 3.0 ready board ?

Thanks Buddy - Z77 [ASRock already has them - not in India though

]. How will they be priced ?

oops @mav2000, methinks u r refering to the Z77 Gene .......... apologies. Any clues on the pricing ? Release date seems April 29th for Ivybridge procs ?

Its is a PCIE 3 board. Check for the new version.

But yes, since there is not much time for the Z-77 launch, I would suggest you wait for that and the prices of Z68 may also come down.

I second waiting for z77, though they may be 1-2k higher for the same models but will be worth it. And get a 3770k instead of 2600k

Z68 prices won't come down, even p67. Prices haven't come down so far

Thanks guys thus far - you already have me gettin all excited & now .....

i7-3770K and any idea at what $ range would it be priced.

Came across this

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5626/ivy-bridge-preview-core-i7-3770k

Though nothing "official" from Intel as yet. The HD 4000 sure looks interesting.

Ok.... got it $ 332 estimated (see abovereferenced article page 3)

Wrong.

Intel CPUs don't change price from the day they are launched.

Almost a year back I bought a Core i7 2600k for 17-18k and the lowest that the CPU ever went at SMC was 16.5-17k. So if an Intel CPU launches at 21k, it will always stay above 19.5-20k+ and get replaced after that.

But that won't happen because:

1. 3770k has a max possible MSRP of $332 and according to Intel CPU Indian prices, that should be 16-17k.

2. The price of 3770k will be the same as that of 2700k, and since the prices haven't really changed since launch, we can expect it to be around 17-18k+

3. I am already assuming a safe measure when I am saying 18-19k. Even if at the launch date it is 19-20k, within a few weeks it will come down to around 18-18.5k.

And the trend has always been there, none of Intel Core i CPUs have ever really got a lower price with time, not until the next batch is introduced and very rare even then. Usually the next batch replaces the older batch with a price increase of perhaps 5% or so initially because Indian sellers try to juice out the maximum from early adopters. So 17k + 5% is like 18-19k

And this is a replacement of 2700k, so expect it to be priced at the 2700k point.

There is a 20-30% chance that on Day 1 they do price around 19-21k, but that will only be for 2-4 weeks MAX, and the chance of that happening is neither that high and primarily because of the increased $ value, the prices of hardware doesn't decrease for several months once the prices are raised, and of course this is valid only for India, and not newegg

Sure I am newbies here at Techenclave but I have few suggestion about Gigabyte's Z68 mobo -

Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3R - http://www.gigabyte.in/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3980#

Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 - http://www.gigabyte.in/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3973#

You can consider these. They have almost same features like Asus P8Z68 V-PRO/GEN3; But their prices under 13k.

I don't recommend either of these compared to the Asus one, there is no competition

1. Asus has cheaper mobos too which are better

2. Sub 13k msi is the best

3. Gigabyte has boot loop issues

4. The above mobos are weaker in every way compared to Asus and msi in the same price, albeit only by a differential in terms of real world performance, but they serve zero advantage

To gather these thought's

1] I should Hang Around (anyways I was planning to build my new system in April 2012) -

I have really STRETCHED my existing RIG since circa 2004 - Amen [Asus A7N8X-X & AMD Athlon 1800; NVidia Geforce 5200; Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 ; HDD 120 GB + 200 GB; 1GB SD RAM - (remember those days ONLY the nerds went for anything above 40-60 GB)...... and Ohh.... that lousy Pinnacle PCTV Tuner Card & shitty Samsung DVD-ROM drive ] - I have to admit that I NEVER EVER have faced any major problem's with my old RIG (that I did not resolve myself) - It still run's as I pen these melancholic thoughts. Today, almost 8 year's later - times have really changed & my adrenaline is rushing again to push for the BEST withing my REACH .... AND THIS IS WHERE I REALLY THANK ALL U TE FOLKS for enlightening me ... Yep.

And WAIT - lemme share the HIGH that I had when I (at the last minute I rushed for the Asus A7N8X-X mobo from lammy - Just 6-7 days after it's Global release) - I got it and flaunted it for the next 6-8 months lol ....

2] If the 3770k is going to be around 16-19K (or 10-15% above the 2600k's existing price) - Might as well wait for it. Only problem is "WHEN WOULD IT BE AVAILABLE IN INDIA" - After it's US release (I presume it would be made available there first); how many day's later in India ? - tentative dates are from April 7th to 29th for it's release ?

3] Motherboard : Same story - When would Asus or Giga launch their Z77 mobo's in India [would my experience of circa 2004 get repeated again. Can I expect latest by May 5th or 10th the Z77 boards in India]. Garn - If only ASRock launched their full range in India - I would have rushed for their Fatal1ty or Extreme series boards ....sigh

4] I still would want to wait for the REAL tests & benchmarking for the Z77 & 3770k - the pre-production & unofficial tests at the moment are exciting enough for me. If not convinced, then I might have to revert back to 2700k & the Z68 Asus
<

5] Educate me on this: Is the 3770k a "real" Ivybridge proc - (Or is Intel just buying time until their nex gen Haswell series) ??? Is PCIe 3.0 fully enabled on it ?

Thanks so much guys

1. Expect around 18.5k Global launch is April 29, you should see it in India by mid or max late may, if you are lucky then second week may

2. Above

3. Mobo launch is April 8, you will have them with or before the CPUs, I recommend going for msi z77 gd80 or gd65 instead, cheaper than gigabyte and equal or better where it counts

4. Not required really, there is 0 possibility of it being inferior to the current setup, it has to be a bit better, guaranteed

5. Yes, but you also need a pci 3.0 card and to actually feel the difference btw pice 2.1 and 3.0 requires 7970cf or above with eyefinity

U gotta convince me real hardcore on this one (substantiated with proof/links .....Grrrrrrrr) - On Why MSI rocks better than giga or asus
<

Thanks a tonne @rite .... you have my full attention !!

MSI has more features than Gigabyte/Asus at the same price point.

MSI performs just a lil less (not observable) than top end Asus mobos and equal to Gigabyte.

MSI is cheaper and Gigabyte or asus.

In India, MSI has better service than Asus, Asus ASS is the worst.

Gigabyte had boot loop problems in their last 2 generations, they may or may not have that this time.

The only advantage Asus might have is that it may overclock 100-200 Mhz higher if you are an expert overclocker

1. That doesn't make any real difference

2. I don't think you are an expert overclocker at this point in time
<

3. No point paying higher for just this when you get crap ASS etc as a side effect

Other than the above points, in terms of observable performance, all 3 will be nearly equal at the 15k price point. however from MSI you will get a high end mobo while from the other two you will get a mid end mobo at the same price. This is despite the fact that they fall in the same tier 1 and are not worse/better than each other.
