I have deliberately not opened this thread in the buying advice as i just want opinions from users of 17" laptop about their experience with the same. I might be buying a new laptop soon (2 months may be) and was thinking about getting a 17" one. I already have a toshiba satellite 15.6" which is 4 years old. This laptop is not to replace the other one but to be used separately.
I need to know if the 17.3" laptops are "TOO BIG" and bulky ? Is it worth considering a 17.3" on top of 15.6" laptop ?
If yes then what brands to consider. I want to buy from amazon.com at the time when i decide to buy.

I have a 15.6" Toshiba Satellite , It weighs tooo much and i had tough time carrying it to Uni everyday for 2 years.

According to me anything above 14" is not termed as laptop.

Yes my toshiba is also heavy. Actually i had got a portable laptop couple of years back, the MSI 12" one but that as turned out to be crap. The battery has died (last for 2 minutes only) and since it was a netbook the proccy and all is super slow. I was thinking about buying a good config laptop which i need not change for few years.

I do not have any desktop at my home in Mumbai so initially thought the 17" one would serve as desktop replacement but i realize that whenever i will be travelling between Mumbai and Pune, i will be carrying the laptop with me.

One more query.... what laptop companies will honor warranty in India for laptop bought in US ?
Because this might be one of the deciding factors (not very important but still).

I have been using 17 inchers for last 6 years, and currently 2 of mine are 17.3, one is 16.4 reason because I keep them on bed and never carry them, this is what they are good for, for carrying theres always a msi 13 incher, a sheer pleasure.

In that case i think i am dropping the plan of 17.3" ones. I would probably go for 15.6" or below size.
It is more of a desktop replacement which will stay at one place.

If it is a desktop replacement, and you are not going to carry it around, there should be no reason to not buy the 17". Another alternative is to get a 13"or 14" beast and use it with an external monitor. That way you get both portability and screen real estate. :)

I think i framed my sentence bit wrongly. I meant that a 17" one is a desktop replacement and i did not mean that i want to buy a desktop replacement laptop :)
I think i will be going for a 14/15 incher as yes bit of portability is definitely required.
I have had connected my Laptop to my 46" TV and it is fun to do so sometimes.

I own a Dell Vostro 3700. (17.3", 16:9). It weighs in just under 3kilos and lugging it around with a backpack is not too much of a hassle. If you use it at a desk/table there is no comparison with smaller laptops.

A small list of pros and cons.(Note that some maybe specific to my device.

Pros
1. Large Screen. 1600x900 or 1080p is perfect for this size. You can sit further away than smaller laptops and view comfortably. A big plus for consumption of media. Also great for multi-tasking
2. Full size keyboard.

Cons
1. Not exactly for the road warrior or someone who uses a laptop as a lap top (no pun intended)
2. Battery life will always be poor due to the larger screen. Some manufacturers include a larger battery which in turn adds to the bulk.

I wouldn't however recommend this particular model even though its one of the lighter 17 inchers and offers a matte screen.

This though looks pretty sweet and would be my next purchase unless someone comes up with something better Newegg.com - SAMSUNG NP700Z7C-S01US Notebook 3rd Generation Intel Core i7 3615QM(2.30GHz) ,17.3", 8GB Memory, 1TB HDD with ExpressCache Technology 8GB, DVD Super Multi, NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M, Intel WiDi, JBL 3 speakers with sub-woofer

Dell, Sony, Asus, Thinkpads, MSI. Rest don't know.

I use the Asus G74 (17'') mostly as a desktop replacement as I needed a gaming pc. You can look here (Amazon.com: ASUS G75VW-AS71 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black): Computers & Accessories) at the G75 which is thinner and lighter but still not the best portable solution. All this considering you'd need it for some amount of gaming.

Can this be an actual desktop replacement which can play most of the FPS games at medium to high setting for the next 2 yrs atleast??

I checked the specs of GTX660M to that of a GTX580(desktop card) and i felt that the 580 has atleast 60% more firepower than the 660M.

Is this right??
