Laptops Buying mSATA laptop SSD in India

Hi,

Has anyone here bought an individual mSATA SSD to add on to their laptop? I've been searching on several sites for 'mSATA' but couldn't find anyone selling these. Are they even available in India at present?

I think there was the Crucial M4 which had pretty good performance , check that out.

Or else Samsung if you can find one

I'm sorry, how do you have a mSATA slot on that motherboard?

And no, mine isn't marketed as a Readycache drive, but as a regular mSATA SSD.

FWIW, I've run a 4000+ with a SATA2 SSD and even that beats the crap out of a 2011 MBP with a far better processor and more RAM.

I have been using a 64gb msata ssd (Mydigital ssd bulletproof3) with a Phison controller in my Thinkpad x220 for almost a year now. Its fast and reliable and I have had no issues. I am looking to sell it to get myself a bigger msata ssd. I got mine from Amazon through Shop and ship. if you need an msata ssd let me know. I recommend msata ssds as they give you a more flexible storage option.

Sorry I didn't realize we were talking about mSATA drives! I have an Asus M2A-VM which has SATA2 ports. Planning to buy a cheap 30/60GB SATA drive for speed! Dont care about transfer rates as sata2 is not going to saturate the bandwidth of the drive. As long as the drive gives me no headache, I'll be very happy. My budget is 5K. Thanks for your time!

Sorry for the noob question, aren't all laptop HDDs/SSDs mSATA ?

No. Most laptops have a standard 2.5" bay, though some ultraportables come with 'slim' slots that take only 7mm drives. mSATA is used on some ultrabooks, there's not much in the specs that reveal what kind of storage is being used. Smaller machines would tend towards using smaller form factors.

You should be good with a 30GB for XP or even a x86 version of Win7, 60GB is comfortable for Win7 x64 and a few small apps. It's the apps that hog most of the space.
@attrish, those prices are daylight robbery. simply not worth the money. Which is why we didn't post the link.

In India prices are too high for msata . Msata can either be used as cache drive or normal boot drive . Msata is not only available in smaller laptops/netbooks but the high end ones also . All high end ones and business laptops have this 2 HDD configuration , One msata and other normal 2.5 HDD . One of the HP laptops has 3 HDD , 2 normal 2.5 and one msata . It give a fast boot drive and separate HDD for data . Get a M4 from US using SNS or ishop and then also it will be way cheaper then India . 32GB will be less for win7/win8 . Both these OS require minimum 64 GB for smooth functioning . Win XP is fine with 32GB but then it might not be able to use the newer functions like TRIM and others
All laptops which have cache drive are basically a msata SSD with a intel software configuration to make it act as cache drive . If you disable it first from intel software GUI and then can install the OS also on the so called cache drive . Sandisk have their own cache software .

Thank you for the detailed reply, I have an old Dell Latitude 830, was top of the line when it was bought, not so much any more but it does the job, its got a lovely 1920 x 1200 display too.. Since mSATA prices are coming down and I read the review on AnandTech - The Full Intel SSD 525 Review: 30GB, 60GB, 120GB, 180GB & 240GB Tested about the new Intel mSata drives, Was wondering if its worth the upgrade.. The lappy has an mSata port, one HDD slot, and a versatile slot which can take a second battery, or second HDD or an optical drive, its presently occupied by an optical drive.
