Asus Xonar DX Suddenly stopped working

Hey guys,

I bought the Xonar DX about 6-8 months ago from Lamington Road after reading it's rave reivews. During installation I had to uninstall the stock realtek drivers to get it to work, and after that it had been performing flawlessly. Now I'm a complete noob but I managed to do the fairly simple installation myself after watching a youtube video.

2 days ago, my pc suddenly went off for no apparent reason. This has never happened before. My mobo is GIGABYTE-B75-D3H coupled with a GTX 660 TI, and as of now everything is working fine with on board sound. So when everything went off, I wasn't able to start my PC for 2-3 minutes (3-4 tries). When it finally switched on, I smelt a very faint smell of something getting toasted but still everything was working fine. There have never been any heat issues and I cannot even hear my rig except for the APC randomly going berzerk.

Next day my back panel 3.5 mm soundcard jack/2.1 speakers were not functioning properly but FP output was ok. The sound output was 50-60% lower than usual, and a simple restart fixed this. Until last night things were alright. Since today morning there is no output at all on any of the sound card jacks (front and back). I tried uninstalling/re installing all sound drivers. I also tried disabling audio controller in BIOS. Still nothing. I updated drivers. Opened my rig and replugged the power connector to the driver. My novice eyes could not detect any burns. I also tried the Uni Xonar drivers to no avail. I think my sound card has to be replaced and unfortunately I lack the expertise to fully diagnose it or take it out. I want to refrain from taking it out myself because the connectors look very delicate and I'll probably snap them with my nervousness.

What leads me to believe that this card's a goner is that in the back panel jacks of the card, one of the jacks is illuminated with a red light. Until last night it had been illuminated but today there is no light at all and I got that faint burning smell again.

So, what do you think ? What are my options ?
I live in Juhu and I would be glad if someone could suggest me a technician who can get this solved for me. The card is still under warranty. Does anyone have experience with Asus Service Centre at grant road ? Should I get it dismantled and take it to the ASS, and what can I expect from the ASS ?

That red light you noticed from one of the jacks, is the light based S/PDIF signal for the optical/toslink cable to be plugged into the port using the supplied plastic adapter. If that red light is no longer visible, it is possible that the sound card has been damaged.

It might be a good idea to get it RMA'd if it is under warranty. Contact Asus' toll free number - 1800 2090 365.

Are there any signs of burns on the card?

This just got a bit too technical for me, but yeah that's what I thought too. I am not good at identifying burns on circuits, they all look the same to me. If everything else is working fine I'm sure the sound card is the culprit.

Any possible causes why this happened 6-7 months down the line ? I was hoping this card would be more durable than that. I haven't even used the rig all that much.

Thanks for the toll free number, I'll try to dismantle it myself and visit the service center.

I really have no idea. I used to have a DX before. Sold it and got myself a STX since I was switching over to a pair of stereo speakers.

Out of curiosity, what power supply do you have? IIRC the DX uses a floppy power connector, does it not?

Yes, it does.

Honestly, I'm not too sure about the PSU and dont feel like opening the cpu just yet. It's either Seasonic S12II 520 or Corsair GS600 or a variant of these two.

Here's a copy paste from the pc suggestion rig thread I made when I bought it back in october :

Intel Core i5 3450 + Gigabyte B75M-D3H : Rs 15,400
Corsair Vengeance 4x2 : Rs 3,200
Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1 TB : Rs 4,450
Dell ST2220L : Rs 8,400
Coolermaster Elite 430 : Rs 2,700
Logitech G100 Key/Mouse Combo : Rs 1,380
MSI GTX 660 TI Power Edition : Rs 22,000
Corsair GS600W : Rs 4,450
APC BR1100VA IN : Rs 5,300

Got the sound card later on.[DOUBLEPOST=1371574410][/DOUBLEPOST]Update: I just checked, I have a Seasonic 100-240 VAC which has 430 V power output.
I'm wondering, is this enough to power the machine or could this be the cause of the burn out ?

Edit : According to http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine, a 359 PSU unit is recommended for my specs, so not sure if that is an issue any longer. I'll update with a snap of the card soon.

Hey,
i stay close to juhu (7 Bungalows), you could probably get your pc over and i coudl help you sort it out.
Your bill states that you have a corsair gs600 watt psu.

Actually, that was the plan. But then someone posted that the Seasonic PSU is a better option, and the dealer did not have the one I wanted so I went for the 430 W Seasonic PSU.
Thanks for the offer but I'm planning on visiting the ASS anyway tomorrow, let's see how that goes.
One more thing I forgot to add: When I configure windows to use the sound card output, there is no sound but the output on the asus xonar software behaves as if it's giving output. Now I've removed the sound card and am getting sound with onboard card.

seasonic is a better psu, but i personally feel that 430w maybe a little low for your system. visit asus ASS 2mrw and let us know what happens. If your visiting the rashi office at lamington road, ask for a Mr>dinesh, he has been very helpfull to me in the past and he should be able to help you out :)
cheers

Will be going to the Andheri East office. Thanks for your inputs.
I agree that 430W might be low but do you think under power can result in components getting roasted ?
I can upgrade but would prefer to wait out a few months if I can.
Cheers

I dont think low power would kill the card.
Let us know what happens with asus.

I went to the Goregaon (E) Rashi office since it's close to my office. It was still a little confusing to find buried inside an industrial area but the upside was that I didn't have to wait much. They checked it and concluded that there's no sound output. Replacement should be ready in about a week. I probed for possible causes and the techie said sometimes this happens with power surges and cant trust any electronics. (!) Service was better than I expected from a service partner.

Considering Rashi only I had ditched Asus but this service scene looks rosy till now. Hope it goes well.

Oh, what product was it ?
My dealer (Dynamic at Lamington) insisted on me buying Asus GTX 660 Ti instead of the MSI that I ordered citing much better service. However the graphic card side is handled by Digicomp, let's just hope I will never need it.

Until yesterday I didn't even know that Asus was outsourcing it's service !

I had Asus mobos (P35 and P45 chipsets) during 2008-2010 which every year failed near Diwali. o_O
For the final one they dint had LGA 775 mobo as replacement, so issued Cheque of Rs.7000 :D
P.S. This is for Rashi at Lemington

In my books it's not bad at all. You got a good refund after 2 years. :asshat:
I once went to Spice service to get a DOA certificate for a tab I ordered online out of impulse. The tab's display was completely dead. It turned out that Spice didn't even have serial nos and after waiting 4-5 hours I had to go a 2nd time to get it. I had to wait another 8-10 days for a replacement from Saholic who refused to refund.

Yeah I almost got 80% back but during that 3 years my PC was non-working for nearly 4 months.
Sadly in India very few companies have great ASS :(. Most of brands are screwed due to bad ASS only. I could remember well when in those days everyone at forums was not suggesting Asus and XFX due to Rashi.

4 months downtime sucks. I'm glad todays hardware is slightly more reliable. I dont think the ASS scene will improve until India's market grows and there's some tight competition like in US. Not to mention the import laws which benefit only the customs officers and importers.
