So what do you guys suggest that we shouldn't even start?
Do you realize AOL was the top search engine, long time ago? Yahoo was another big shot. Google still started and took them over.
Pardon my words but that's a looser talk that you guys are doing there. Just not believing enough, not trying enough and just finding excuses to fail.
Yes the initiative could fail. No way does that mean it shouldn't be attempted. What really would you recommend otherwise?

@Vasishta.Sushant Are you seriously comparing two entirely different industries? Google was conceived in a college dorm room because all it needed was a different code, something which doesn't need money. The innovative approach of Brin and Page was enough to get the project off the ground.
If you want to beat Taiwan at hardware manufacturing, the R&D cost alone would be staggering. Intel spends billions of dollars every year for R&D, something which our government can not do. This is even before we start manufacturing chips.

It's not loser talk, it's the wiser one, the difference in level is just too high if you're aware of the advancements in the semiconductor industry, any other microprocessor company like Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, etc are literally decades ahead and still spend billions in r&d every year like @Mr.J already mentioned.
First they'll have to come up with chip design from scratch which is no easy task, next they'll need their own foundry if they plan on making it here which in itself requires years of experience and developments of processes to get proper yields, not to say 10 billion is loose change to build one.
Even if they do come up with something it'll be like a 15 year old pentium on a 350nm node
, it's literally like they are trying to build a cycle tyre when the world is driving ferraris.Aiming for the stars is a different thing but not like a blind fool, if you want advancements in this field poach talent, build institutes and develop courses for students interested in advanced chip design.
The foundation has to be built first instead of the top floor which this govt. seems to not understand, just like their plan to spend 10 billion on a single bullet train line while we still flush sh*t directly onto the tracks in other trains.

I would like to answer the negative comments regarding the Indian chip initiative. First of all, Indians don't need to really make a chip on 14nm node. That's a big lie. Nor they have to have cutting edge technology to be competitive. The reason is that even beyond the 14nm node processors the majority of the chips and equipments for defence industry, hospitality industry, heath care industry etc are made on a bigger node. And that's where India needs to be self sufficient.
Now a days everything from a calculator, watch, transistor, car to a washing machine, automatic gun, to missiles, everything needs a chip to function. You simply can't depend on an enemy country like China or any other country for your basic needs. You have to have a way to make it yourself. That's where this initiative slots in.
Also, Russians too have a similar initiative. Just google that.
For all those who think that the R & D budget of Intel or Amd etc is high. Think again. We are talking about a country and not a private company. A country like India is the biggest importer of arms in the world. It not only buys arms but even compels seller country to share the complete technology for manufacturing.
There is no way that any other private company would be able to muster as many resources both technically and financially as this country can.
And please do have a proper understanding of these things before crapping this thread like that.

Great, this video is just a tip of the iceberg. India is innovating. India is leading. It's not the India of the past where Usa , Russia used to dominate.
For all the nay sayers..
People are so ill informed and still think India can't do it or doesn't have the calibre to lead the world. Mangalyaan was just an example of what India can do at such a low cost.
Nothing can be done about pessimistic or ignorant people. Try to be optimistic. And even if people here say otherwise. You can live in your small dream world. Noone cares.
But India will lead one day. Whether you want it or not.
