Apple falls 70% short of its iPhone sales target in India: BofA report

iPhone-maker Apple has failed to meet its target of selling 10 million iPhones in India by 2016-17, a new report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global shows.

“Historically, India handset market has been a very small market for Apple (iPhones accounting for 1% of sales globally) given the price sensitive nature of the market. Approx. 70-75% of smartphones sold in India are at the sub-$150 level, while just 7% are in the “high-end” bracket of $300+,” the report explains.
“Industry participants noted that the actual selling price (ASP) of an Apple iPhone in India is $612, much higher than Samsung’s ASP of $173 and Micromax’s $86. Indeed, Apple’s sales in India are around 2 million, way short of its target of selling 10 million mobile phones in India by 2016-17,” it further explains.

Unreasonably highly priced device. Not on par with US pricing. Yeah keep them coming. ;) Until that 10 million'th customer buys!

This is called progress. We're reaching international levels of corporate-govt. collusion. Take that, USA !

I don't understand why a trillion dollar company keeps begging for scraps like this. makhi choos company.

Because all their products are out of the buying power range for 99% of Indians? Why do you think they never launched stores here officially, even now? They want the government to reduce taxes and give subsides to incentivize manufacturing smartphones in India and bring down overall cost of retail devices.

Don't you want that? especially if you're an Apple fan and you can't afford their latest and greatest. The iPhone 8 is on track to be the first $1000 Apple phone when it launches due to the sheer amount of technology in it. The smartphone market in India is still catering to budget choices, only the %1 or even less in this country can afford Apple's latest phones. They are status symbols simply because of brand recognition and high pricing.

I want to defer on this. Weren't Redington India official sellers / stores for Apple here from years? Govt giving out tax benefits of few hundred rupees on a 80k phone wont hurt them a bit. Cost would still be paid by consumer and not Apple. The company is just trying to leech off both consumers and govt at same time. GST actually increased tax on made in India phones I read in economic times or somewhere.

I'm not a fan of them. The rest of my family is. I get to see them crib about the product and how it slows down from time to time. My 3 year old 8k Huawei phone is on par with their 20-30k iPhone 5/6 or whatever. I can easily get a new phone within 10k each year while they keep trying to get their worth for an overpriced phone. I don't care about the technology in iPhone 8 or 9. I buy according to my miserly budget and 99% of Indians do the same thing. Government giving out even 100% tax concessions will not change the price of iPhone to 8-10k magically. It will still remain at prices 99% of Indians can't afford. The company does not care about bringing their product to 99% Indians. They only care about their bottom like the rest of the companies.

Hahaha rotfl "sheer amount of technology in it"....pls elaborate and enlighten what is the 'technology' that it has that others dont have or for that matter what did the last 5 iphones have in terms of 'technology' that other phones dont have...

PS: Marketing and ads arent 'technology'

Did I ever mention about other phones and their tech? We're talking about the cost of an iPhone here. Don't make this about Android vs iPhone.

And I made my statement based on an article from Forbes.

Combined with the new 3D Touch module, these areas total roughly $100 and may be just the tip of the iceberg. After all long overdue wireless charging and quick charging are also expected to arrive with this generation along with Touch ID integrated into the display. So given a 256GB iPhone 7 Plus already sells for $969 (and Apple needs to maintain its industry leading profit margins), $1,000 actually seems conservative.

Apple or for that matter other businesses, only need to increase their shareholders value. I don't see them decreasing the cost for their devices, they know we are very brand conscious and will buy iDevices. Thus, they will try to get discounts on the supply chain, and still squeeze the customer. All in the name of R&D.

What you are saying doesn't add up...

Assumption 1 : no company will give customers huge amounts of money on every phone sold if any

Now you are saying iPhone tech 'costs' 1000 usd... If the iPhone tech is not unique in any way, which it isn't based on 1 forbes article as it is long overdue... Why are we taking about forbes articles as noble prize white papers btw?

this means that other companies have tech that costs them 1000 usd... Since such tech phones are available for even 300 or lesser in usd... It means along with the conservative assumption that either Apple is stupid to. Buy way overpriced tech or they are just brainwashing millions to believe the cost of their tech is a 1000 bucks

Uhhh the iPhone 8 is rumored to have an OLED panel, 3D touch and a fingerprint scanner under the screen and there might be even more undisclosed tech under the hood, not to mention the camera improvements.
This information is constantly leaked out and Forbes is a very reputable source, Not sure again, what you're trying to say.

This is Apple we're talking about here, they like to think of themselves as the pioneers of some "groundbreaking" technologies in their devices when they bring them to the market.
What they actually do is, they bring the same technologies as other companies like Google Samsung, Sony, Motorola etc. who have crudely implemented them in their devices.

Apple brings it to the market in a more refined and mainstream way. At least they like to think that and it's pretty much how the Apple universe has thrived and succeeded.

Apple nor its fans care if these new technologies were brought by other companies to the market FIRST! They like to do things their own way, design and manufacture components in-house, that's why Apple constantly patents everything they make. They sued Samsung asking for billions and Samsung counter-sued, this is normal when patent technologies overlap and are infringed upon all the time.

Apple's profit margins are huge, unlike other phone manufactures, They always makes a profit on every device sold, whereas Samsung or Motorola or even Google will be willing to take a loss on selling each device because they don't sell as fast and well as Apple's products.

And btw the "Trillion Dollar Company" tag is nothing but market valuation or market cap of Apple's future, it's still not hit that mark yet, it's like the stock market, sure the sensex today is at 31k but when it crashes its gonna wipe out huge amounts of wealth that was created out of thin air. The same thing applies to Apple's stock.

The only and really impressive thing is how much in Cash reserves Apple has, they could buy Sony or even Microsoft with amount of money they have in the bank. Now that's impressive.

A company like that didn't get rich by selling products on small margins.

And this all is not a matter of new information. It's all a simple google search.

If You ask "why or how does apple have so much popularity and influence?" that question is really hard to answer...
Because then you've to deal with brand awareness, consumer behaviour and trends and all of that marketing and research mumbo jumbo, which we rather not talk about, cause it's boring as fuk.

I couldn't even find one point worth quoting to reply... Not sure what you are saying?

I and most Android users don't really agree to your or Apple claims of them doing things better so it is not a fact FYI...
I think you were just advertising the fact that Apple has trillion dollar market cap? So what? Should I throw my money down the gutter if they are rich?

Apart from your nonsensical statements about phone companies giving money to consumers and calling forbes a "nobel prize winning white paper" ....

I think you don't understand what is up for discussion here....

Newsflash - it's not android!

I was talking about apple's tech philosophy but you clearly are trolling or simply unable to or don't want to understand. which is it?

I was talking about why they're the market leader in terms quality/reliability and performance and they enjoy a position most android flagship makers can only dream of...and apple isn't only a phone company.

I and most Android users don't really agree to your or Apple claims of them doing things better so it is not a fact FYI...

You choose to be ignorant that's your choice, but it's not even a debate which is better in terms of performance and quality and brand value, Apple wipes the floor in most departments compared to Android and they will continue dominating. But I think you can't seem to fathom that idea that people really like Apple.

No one asked you to....Clearly apple products aren't meant for you.
You have no interest in them, why are you even asking a stupid question like that?
Why should anyone care about ....you not wanting to pay big money for apple phone?
when the majority are perfectly fine doing so? lol cmon man.

Btw this stupid worn out argument shouldn't even be up for debate in this thread ....period.

Okay sir as I can see you are so polite and awesome that you can abuse people like me anytime you want with your fantastic comments.

Point taken. Sorry for talking to you. I guess all apple fans are as arrogant and foolish as you.

I didn't abuse you at all, you used a condescending tone mocking me for what I wrote earlier...

Android's cheap and it's best offering (again cheaper than apple) can go toe to toe with apple's best.....but we all know it falls short man. It's quite meaningless to argue, android will be whatever Google and it's partners choose it to be.
Their objective is to serve a large spectrum of consumers form basic to flagship, and they all have custom versions of Android OS which vary wily in performance.....
That's not the case with iPhone, performance only scales up depending on new the device is.

Bottom line if you're happy in the whatever price segment on Android then stay there, because you have the choice to scale up later if you want to.

With Apple you buy a 6s a 7 or a 7plus...you're getting top of line performance. and the user experience is uniform and seamless across the board with a few and far inbetweem changes ... that aren't even noticeable (except camera)

Also you can't deny flagship killers like Oneplus (5) are now going to cost as much as iPhones (40k).

Ironically there aren't even any Android hardware manufacturers in India yet, phones are still assembled with parts coming from China.

So apart from some conspiracy theory of Govt being manipulated or taking kickbacks for allowing Apple in...how is this a bad thing?
