Banks Have Extorted over Rs.50,000 Crore from Customers in Dubious Levies & Charges

People seem shocked at the disclosure that only the public sector banks (PSBs) had collected Rs10,000 crore as penalty from customers for not maintaining a minimum balance in their savings account and for cash withdrawals beyond three times. This data would not have come into public domain but for a question asked in the Parliament.

Actually, the sum reported to Parliament is only a fraction of what banks are recovering from hapless customers. The real sum could at 10 times higher if you include excessive interest, collection by private banks and various usurious charges. Small sums from individual customers aggregate to a huge amount that is going straight to banks’ bottom-line, unnoticed, while they lose thousands of crores of rupees in poor and corrupt lending to large businesses.

The government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) are silent about extortive charges collected from ordinary depositors because disaggregated customers rarely fight back and politicians only respond to issues that affect their core vote bank.

Same with Icici. Debit card annual fee is close to 500. This is for savings account.

Salary accounts are still free.

HDFC site says debit card charges are as low as 150/year. https://www.hdfcbank.com/personal/p...s-accounts/regular-savings-account/rates-fees

And if you have a SavingsMax Account with an MAB of 25k, you get a Lifetime Free Platinum Debit Card. https://www.hdfcbank.com/personal/p...avings-accounts/savingsmax-account/rates-fees

ICICI Senior Citizen Silver Savings Account has an MAB of 25k and free debit card.
That page isnt updated and no regular offered now, they will also heavily push for the expensive cards by saying Rupay aint available and i experienced this in 3 big branches in Gurgaon. The lowest debit card is Rupay platinum which is Rs 250+ taxes which is not a Visa or Mastercard so lower acceptance at some places.

I have noticed ealier hdfc gave free debit card, now debit card has a annual fee of 500+

Depends on what kind of account you have. If you have decent MAB, then there will be no fee. I have a non salary ICICI account and no fee for debit card currently since I have premium account. For normal accounts, they will charge.

This is further motivated by govt's mandate to discourage free services (debit/credit card free, NEFT, IMPS fees, DD charges etc) by banks. If the bank offers any free service, they are now required to pay taxes for it with base cost of service assumed at highest possible rate charged for it. Banks cannot eat up the loss of giving services for free and also paying taxes at the highest rate for them. So, you will see more and more banking services becoming paid services even for those with high MAB's.

That Sucks. My average balance last year started at 25k and had gone to 1 lakh in dec. Still was told wont be free.

Hdfc, on the other hand , provides lifetime free debit card on their savings max account. Maybe one can consider shifting their loyalty towards hdfc

No chance it will be free for that kind of MAB. My ICICI premium account requires MAB of 2.5 lac in savings + FD
Okay, doesn't make sense to keep such high amount in FDs as over Rs 10k interest you get tax cut at source.[DOUBLEPOST=1546852877][/DOUBLEPOST]
