Thats because only tech section posts are counted towards the total. Market and General Talk do not count.
I wondered this and i thought it was some technical error but now i see it's by design. Every msg should count btw
No it shouldn't. Message count is one of the requirements for getting promoted from Recruits. If all (General Talk + Marketplace) messages did count, everyone will flood those and get promoted, leading to more scams and more promoted spam accounts.
Message count requirement is to make sure the person associated is genuinely interested in providing value to the forum rather than deal sniping and crapping on threads.
I had no clue that number of messages was associated to the so called status or ranking on this forum. Wow. So basically someone who keeps posting on daily basis, will be promoted to this so called higher status you mean? Well in that case that user needn't use those specific sections you mention and may as well utilise the other sections where msgs are counted and still get promoted, unless I'm missing something.
Anyway, pls disregard what I said.

Ok that explains a lot. I had over a 120 messages and thought how are that many missing. Thank you for the help.

Until promoted, the user's messages will need approval from mods. The approval is unlikely if the messages themselves don't add value to the thread.
