Forum Feedback Upcoming changes in user ladder titles

Why is there a likes based limit too? AFAIK likes are fairly recent, like last 5-10 yrs. So most will have less likes.
Also if it has to be banal like alphabets, why not just numbers?

Likes based limit is there to promote quality and not just quantity. Will revisit in future when needed. I agree likes have been around for past 10 years so it is not in favor of the users who have contributed earlier than 10 years

Numbers are reserved for a future change to indicate consistent activity levels. Activity can fit in single digit numbers. Levels cannot fit in single digit alphabets.

Maybe revise the numbers required for each level. No one is changing what they post based on how many likes they get.

Not sure if it is possible to do but likes can also be differentiated. For example, likes given on posts in pc hardware/deals/tech discussion sections etc should be given more weightage than likes given on posts in general section.

I double that. Memes posted in memes thread gets more reactions because of it's nature while it is 0% tech.

Great suggestion, something that is on the list of things to do but not possible currently. There is a thought of bringing this within 6 months. The ranks/titles will be recalculated after that.

Not a valid reason to reduce the criteria. In fact it should be higher then. Nevertheless, will figure out something for old members post the 20th anniversary celebration.

I dont think you get the point. No is posting for likes even if you give 100x more weightage. Its not like its social media where it converts to revenue. For a moment if what you say is true, and people chase likes, then people will post in most popular categories and few will post on pure tech stuff. So apple vs android vs MS type of posts will get the most likes. Or political ones.

I generally never get into forum admin at TE. But it just seems that the system went from fun to dry abcde and with wrong priorities. Rest ofcourse is your call.

I am agreeing with you and more. No one is posting for likes or for titles or for color of their title badge. So whether we call it Adept or Level D, how and when we reach there should not matter. How was it fun before and dry now? What are the wrong priorities. How are indifference and priorities going hand in hand. What changes if we revert back to the old system?

I think it was cool and quirky when we had titles earlier. I, for one, was thinking of reaching adept from disciple, so that I can edit my user title to something funny. ABCD also works but it just seems bland and without any character.

I think whether AB CD or other titles doesn’t matter much so long as one can easily identify the rank easily. Current system is easy for identifying rank.

Editing titles after a rank reached should be there.I haven’t reached that rank but what I can see is some does have so assuming it’s still there.

We should keep doing what we and all the other members were doing earlier in the forum rather than discussing How one should be called.

“ Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What’s in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call’d,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name;
And for thy name, which is no part of thee,
Take all myself.”— William Shakespeare

I can understand what you, Party Monger and others are feeling. The titles without words lack meaning and therefore not relatable. We can have a solution that satisfies both. The titles will remain the letters from A to Z, but can be expanded. Where we have a space crunch, like in mobile view, we can just retain the first letter. On web, we can keep the full expanded form.

  1. A - Apprentice
  2. B - Beginner
  3. C - Contributor
  4. D - Discoverer
  5. E - Explorer
  6. F - Follower
  7. G - Graduate
  8. H - Helper
  9. I - Innovator
  10. J - Journeyman
  11. K - Keeper
  12. L - Leader
  13. M - Mentor
  14. N - Navigator
  15. O - Operator
  16. P - Pioneer
  17. Q - Questor
  18. R - Reformer
  19. S - Sage
  20. T - Trailblazer
  21. U - Unifier
  22. V - Visionary
  23. W - Wizard
  24. X - Xenolith
  25. Y - Yogi
  26. Z - Zenith
