Are Shower/Tap filters really useful?

All you installed is an iron filter. As it says in your photo

^Unless his water looks like that out of the tap this isn't the product to use.

It doesn't soften water at all. For that you need a dedicated water softener

^Unless you installed something like that you did not soften any water. Just filtered it for specific elements.

This is that resin business that @yugaaa was hinting at but never gave any source.

These are all custom jobs by various small companies around the country. This particular one is based in Chennai. You will have to find a local equivalent.

^only filters iron, manganese & sulphur
Yes, it was an iron filter. The water was brownish direct from the tap with strong metallic smell. This particular iron remover made the water clear and the metallic smell also disappeared and what I meant as soft was the water was clear without any impurities.

The frequency depends on how soon the balls dissolve . Mostly the balls stay for 2 weeks .

Those balls are called siliphos polyphosphate. They condition the water by releasing phosphates inro the water disrupting the formation of scale. For bathing, water should lather normally. Also laundry will be easier as the hard water ions will be sequestrated.

Ask google

Can siliphos polyphosphate help with hair fall caused by hard water

Yes, Siliphos polyphosphate, often used as an antiscalant, can help with hair fall and other hair-related issues caused by hard water. Hard water contains high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium, which can build up on the hair and scalp, leading to dryness, breakage, and even hair fall. Siliphos polyphosphate works by preventing the formation of mineral deposits, effectively reducing the mineral buildup on your hair and scalp, and thus potentially improving hair health.

Inspite of the water being as hard as it was. It hasn't been softened. These siliphos balls can work to address hard water.

All you need to do is work out where you will situate them and a replacement schedule.
