Think twice before buying from dBrand again.

If you're a foreign-born Indian and grew up in the public school system in the US/Canada/etc, you will have a much harsher response to this than other Indians will. It's impossible to communicate to people the lived experience of getting ostracized and bullied for your name as a kid, and how shit like this triggers those memories. I'd never use a dbrand skin anyway but yeah, they can go **** themselves.
I can relate to this a bit. There was time when my niece (7yo at that time) did not want to take south Indian breakfast to school in Germany because her classmates would make fun of her. People who never experienced name shaming or shaming based on way of life would never understand the seriousness of this tweet/issue..

There's an ad coming on YT about some foreign school/college principal talking like this. Calls a girl Dickshit instead of Dixit and so on. Couldn't find it to post here.

IP violation : offense
bullying someone: offense.
If I call you an idiot, and someone else robbed you of everything you own, do we both deserve the same punishment? Since they're both "offenses"?
They gave money because if the victim goes to court, they will end up paying lot lot lot more.
From what I understand of the free speech laws in the US/Canada, this would get laughed out of court unless they could make a reasonable case for hate speech, which this wouldn't qualify as. And as far as I'm aware Dbrand doesn't even have a corporate entity in India that can be taken to court.
Also, just because someone else does not feel offended does not mean everyone has to put on a happy face when they get bullied. No, it doesnt work that way.
Never said it does. I'm saying that the response is disproportionate. All this for a non-racist, playground-level insult? There's no way that that's not an overreaction.
The reason why this blew out is because dBrand has been at it for years and this time, they crossed a line. There is a limit to humor even if it is dark humor.
It's not dark humor, it's literally just bottom of the barrel, childish name-calling. It's not good to make fun of someone's name (not least because it's incredibly low brow), but to say that it's "going too far" is an incredibly thin-skinned response in my opinion.

I could understand this if there was literally any indication that they were doing it because he was Indian. Thus far no one has offered any evidence for that claim - I am open to changing my mind if someone does so.

Where did "Indian Culture" enter the scene here? Your post makes it absolutely clear how oblivious you are to the actual reality. Do you realize how 'curry', 'dirty', 'smelly' are almost synonymous with the name "India"? Did you check the replies to that tweet before posting this?
Chicoms or their sympathisers do that. I see lots of these comments any time India is boosted and they're all CCP bots that pretend to be westerners. Who is most threatened by India's rise. China. Not westerners who would welcome India's rise as a counterweight. The biggest obstacle to a China centric Asia is India. Curry, dirty smelly has always been there but only of late do you get abused for it? By whom

What is India doing on the international stage that is so objectionable or threatening? Nothing. India wants to be friends with everybody. Vishwaguru to the world. So it's only the rise that is threatening and to a particular set of people.

The idea is make you know your place. They always get triggered when saying India #1, Asia's voice. I find Modi imitating Nehru on that last one. Nehru could get away with it because India at the time indeed was #1 in Asia. Try those tactics and you'll discover where they're really from.
There is a fine line between "joking" and "insulting". Can't help those who can't figure that out. As for "teaching a lesson", the company did learn it the bitter way. And no, seeking compensation for pathetic insults like this is not equivalent to chapri characteristics. Lol.
When you can't identify the other side's ethnicity or origin you can't hit back and feel victimised.
This is like saying that an annoying kid pestering you is alright cuz he "always" does that.
There's always two options. Ignore or set traps and then discover who you're up against.

You can't control what others say but are 100% in control of how you react.

It's futile to argue with those who just won't get it. Time to unwatch this thread.

Not going to waste more time here. Please feel free to normalize this.
Yeah man. Looks like there are many who never came out of the comfort zone. For them, its all okay as long as they get freebies when something happens.

I don't know I'd have thought the opposite. It's those that have never experienced it that would react more emotionally.

People always confuse this with racism when it's just harassment and bullying. That fat white kid got it too. The Jewish one got it a lot more. At some point you stand up to it. All part of growing up. Anything different from the majority gets picked on.

I once told a Chinese guy about Indian names you could make fun of and then proceeded to make fun of Chinese names :D

Making fun of names is a universal thing and with all the migration means it's going to continue.

Back in the old days when there were phone directories, a friend would go through the names and find strange ones, cold call and abuse them all for the sake of fun.

Ever heard of Ralph Lauren. He had to change his name because his real name was Lifshitz. Nobody is going to buy designer clothes no matter how good with a name like that :D

Only when it happens to them for the first time. It would be more like a shock. As long as it is happening to a random person, they would be like 'why are they overreacting?'.

Yes but it's pervasive in which case growing up in India as opposed to elsewhere means you don't know how to parry or do repartee

Let me give you counter example. A Goan friend of mine in silicon valley once interviewed this Hispanic guy for a job. They met in a bar. The guy orders a sandwich and asks for it to be wrapped. He them puts the burger on the seat and sits on it for like half hour. My friend was thinking this guy was crazy.

I told him the guy was making a Cuban sandwich and recommended he try it. Not the way this guy did it but from a deli. It's usually pork and cheese. Then they put an old school iron on top of it for a few minutes. The kind that takes coal. The weight gets the liquid out and it becomes very tasty later almost addictive.

lol, they ended up paying $10k and apologized. Still, look at the arrogance. Few more escalations and they would stop doing this shit.

They did end up deleting the tweet, the guy is richer by $10000 and we can now go back to debating about Indian politics and climate change.

Lol serves them right
