Budget 31-40k Should i buy a 5700x3d or a 5950x?

I have two systems, my primary and my server.

My primary system is:
R9 5900x
B550 Aorus pro AC
4x8gb 3733 cl16
5700xt
3440x1440p 165hz monitor
Win11

My server is
R5 3600
X570 phantom gaming x
4x8gb 3200 cl16
1060
8hdds, 2 m.2
Unraid

I need to upgrade my server CPU. Its almost perpetually at 50-70% usage keeping up with multiple users and dockers. No vms.
Either I buy a 5700x3d for my main system, put the 5900x in my server and sell the r5 3600.
Or
I buy 5950x for my server and keep the 5900x in my main system and sell my r5 3600
Or
I buy another 5900x for my server since it is only 2k more expensive than the 5700x3d.

My main system use case is 3-8 year old single player aaa games, 2d cad (most important), Photoshop, very little video editing.
I am the type who does one thing at a time. Won't have 10 apps open at the same time.

What path do you think I should go down?

Additional random bit of info: my main system is open loop cooled. If I keep the 5900x in my main desktop, I will lap the block and CPU since it is now out of warranty.
 
If you're on budget, 3950x @20k for server.
5950x @ stock runs on lower frequency than 3950x on all cores 100% load unless you enable PBO which raises the thermals much high.
 
Are you getting CPU bottlenecked in any game now with 5900x? Older games were more optimised and don't load the CPU as much as modern ones. In this case you won't see any benefit from x3d, but with its lower single core performance, there will be a reduction in performance in CAD and Photoshop

i checked on amazon and pcpricetracker.in both places havd the 3950x at 60k. where did you see it for 20?
and yes, i'll enable pbo on the 5950x in the server. it only has a 92mm tower cooler now for the 3600, but i'll upgrade that to the noctua D12L. (case is the silverstone cs380, so cant fit like a d15 or something)

no, i'm not cpu bottlenecked in any games I am playing. Its my server that really needs an upgrade.
Even with the 5700x3d, I dont really expect any sort of improvements in gaming right now. i am hoping the 3d cache helps is in 2d cad but that is a gamble esentially. As you said, slower clock speeds will reduce performance as well.
More than that I guess I am looking at it as a long term CPU. I intend to keep the system as my primary for another 3 years after which it will become a secondary system used by others. Both my primary system and the server will not get any upgrades in the future. So looking for cpus that would make the system life last as long as it can.
 
If you are looking for an improvement in gaming, i.e. not any e-sports game and most of your workloads don't use heavy multithreading and don't require the cpu to boost higher you can go with the 5700x3d, you can also look up benchmarks on youtube comparing the two to get a better idea of what kind of a performance difference you will be looking at. Other than that if you are happy with the performance on your current system you should most definitely go for the 5900x option, the 5950x imo is just overkill.

Doubt air cooler would suffice, Temps immediately shoot up to 80-86° on my 5950x cooled with 360mm AIO, when I benchmark all cores with PBO enabled. Gaming performance improved a bit due to higher single core frequency but overall, I kinda regret installing 5950x over 3950x as I experience often temp spikes which piss me off. I look forward to build a new 7950x3d workstation & see how much things improve owing to my workload. Will put artic liquid freezer 3 or custom loop

I am quite happy with the performance of the 5900x in terms of general usage on my main system. My use case is not very multithreaded and I am the type who likes to have one thing open at a time so I feel like I'm wasting the multithreaded performance of the 5900x. Hence the thought of putting that into my server and getting a CPU for myself that will last a long time in terms of general daily performance. Do you think the additional cache (but loss of frequency) would be beneficial in the long term daily use like in a browser?
My 2d cad software is old as heck and runs like a dream normally. Only on very heavy files which i open maybe once in a year, it chuggs a bit with certain commands like hatches. I know IPC and frequency helps, but it doesn't use more than 4 cores. No idea how to test if extra cache would help.

Ah. I'm in Hyderabad and don't know such offline places to get such deals. If you could hook me up, that would be amazing.
My server won't get hit by max frequency, all core loads. It'll be a lot of spikes of multiple people using multiple apps and dockers. I wanted to go for an aircooler because its a server and reliability is most important. The Noctua d12L is the largest aircooler i found that could fit in my case (silverstone cs380). If it can't handle the temps, i guess I'll turn pbo off or atleast limit it.
I've gone custom hard line water cooling for my primary system. Two 360s cooling both cpu and gpu. Its awesome but i wont do it again. At least not hardline, maybe soft tubing.
 
I think you should go for either a new 5900x or a the 3950x that was suggested earlier as the 5700x3d is mainly targeted towards providing better gaming performance and even though it might give a slight performance boost in large cad files due to the larger cache but it will also cause performance drops in case of rendering and simulation which would benefit from the higher core count and clock speeds.

Yea that makes sense. If I can get my hands on a cheap 3950x, I'll do that. Otherwise another 5900x it is. It is now less than half the price I paid for my first 5900x on launch day (53k)
