Storage Solutions Giving up on Jellyfin server, 2nd HDD Failed in 1 year time, what am I doing wrong?

The damage is not to your external hard disk or SSD, but to the Jellyfin bug itself. I experienced the same thing when using an external SSD, all my movies were deleted by Jellyfin itself without any notification.

Jellyfin software is still in the development stage and is not perfect, the software is too complicated to create, there are too many folders
Damn, Jellyfin has bugs that bad? Had no idea. Was thinking of using it with OMV on a Pi4 I have.

Any (free) alternatives you would know of?

no breaking bugs at all, my one issue was PGS subs which they have fixed, been running jellyfin on my seedbox for years now and we have 5-6 devices running on it and there are no issues with streams/transcoding.

Never encountered such bug unless we did an oopsie and deleted/removed some datasets.
It has been rock solid for me (better than plex for few things - direct play on LAN never worked for me, it would default to transcode + stream over internet even when client - server were in same subnet).
I've also never come across any issues while running it locally from my windows laptop, apart from my own stupidity while trying to find the server on my local network from other devices.

Hoping to slowly tinker my way upto running it with tailscale/reverse proxy someday.

Tailscale is so easy to setup and run! Just install clients on both devices, log in with same account, done!

I have used Jellyfin for over 3 years now with the same portable HDD and never had an issue with the data or HDD. I wouldn't in anyway generalise such issues that some might be facing.

Also I am behind a double NAT environment on account of my ISP but the fact that my Asus router with Merlin has a 1-click Tailscale setup has made my life so much easier.

You mean you can use tailscale setup in your asus router to access any device connected via that router even if that device itself does not have tailscale client?

You need to install the Tailscale client for the VPN connection with the router as exit node but then it works like being on LAN.

Pick any on the lists above.
