Strange behaviour of my Internet connection wrt my two wifi routers...

JMak

Yeah.. I am at it ;)
Adept
Right
My primary router is a tp link Archer c80 (to save hassle I had cloned the mac of my previous router in c80) the connection from the ont device comes straight into this router..
My secondary router is Archer C7 (connected to c80 through one of its lan port) , It is primarily used for my audio streaming.. My ext hdd is connected to it via USB port and my pc is also connected to it via lan.. All the rest of the devices like firesticks, chromecast, echo devices, Google spewkers, phones, laptops, tablets etc are largely connected to c80 owing to better location of it..

So around 3 months back I asked my isp to double my broadband speed..
Strangely the double speed is only available via lan or wifi from the Secondary router only..
When using wifi or lan from the c80 (the primary router) it still gives half the speed (that I originally had), as far as I know c80 has Gigabit ports for lan
(I have checked this by disabling wifi on all other devices connected to c80 or C7)
.

What are your internet plan speeds (before and after)?

Is the 5GHz band not being used / disabled on the primary router (C80)?

You're using C7 as just an AP, right?

The 5ghz is being used, but lan also not giving full speed..
Yes C7 is Ap if that's what it is called, just connected it's blue port to one of lan ports of c80
Were you getting full 100Mbps on LAN devices before the upgrade? If yes, were you able to get full 100Mbps on mobile phones when connected to C80 before the plan upgrade or was it more like 70-75Mbps max?
Yes
Was getting like 97 98
It was never 75

If yellow on C80 is connected to blue on C7, and default settings are in place, the C7 will be running in Router mode and double NATting is there but it is not what's affecting your speeds, this is something unrelated. The devices outside of C7 won't be able to access devices connected to C7 (if it is working in router mode).

Usually in the older times, LAN (yellow) to LAN meant AP and LAN to WAN (blue) meant router modes. But from the last few years, there is an additional setting where you can select to run the device in AP mode or Router mode after connecting LAN to WAN.

This is not what's affecting the speed, just some information.

Still getting the same 97 - 98 speeds (after plan upgrade) on C80 WiFi, correct?

You mentioned you're not getting full speed on LAN also, is it above 100 or below 100?

So to summarise, can you please tell what speeds you're getting on -

C80 WiFi
C80 LAN
C7 WiFi
C7 LAN

C80 WiFi
C80 LAN
C7 WiFi
C7 LAN

C80 WiFi 100mbps (96 to 99)
C80 LAN 100mbps (close to 100)
C7 WiFi 190mbps plus
C7 LAN close to 198

Check the Ethernet status on the C80 router whether its showing 100mbps or 1000mbps full duplex ? Change the Ethernet cable connecting C80 and ONT device preferably with the one came with the C80 router and check the status/speedtest again.

Since OP is getting 100+ on C7, ONT <--> C80 and C80<--> C7 must be Gigabit already

@OP first check if your PC has Gigabit LAN
Then check the cable going into it

When one is gee
C80 WiFi 100mbps (96 to 99)
C80 LAN 100mbps (close to 100)
C7 WiFi 190mbps plus
C7 LAN close to 198
When speeds are being limited at close to 100Mbps (when it should be more), most of the times it is due to ethernet getting capped at 100Mbps due to 2 pair wire / faulty wire / FE (100Mbps) port / faulty GE port.

But since OP is getting >100Mbps down the line, that excludes all the above.

Indeed strange behaviour.

Yes when c80 is connected to pc it gives 100 or below but when the C7 is connected it gives 200 or below, kind of freaky when you see c80 is the one supplying to C7

That might explain slow speeds on LAN connection to C80 but won't explain slow speeds on 5GHz WiFi on C80.

If there is an option in the TPLink Interface, I would suggest OP to once check the status on all the LAN/WAN ports if it is showing 1000Mbps Full Duplex, just in case, no harm in checking once just to be sure.

Will do in the evening..

Okay this is interesting
So I checked the ethernet settings for speed and duplex was set to auto, C7 was giving full speed in auto settings and c80 wasn't.

I changed it to 1gbps duplex and viola now both the routers via lan are giving full speed.

As far as the wifi speed goes I was at fault coz I was always checking using my phone and incidentally only the 2.4ghz ssid was saved, hence giving low speed in phone..

Today connected an elitedesk mini with on board wifi for the first time and with 5ghz even the c80 giving full speed.

For the time I am sorted
Many thanks guys
