i would say laptops over desktop always because you can simply dock them or carry them whenever you like... but they aren't even out yet so too soon to make that call
they will be in Nov, 24 so started planning the whole in the pocket

i am a linux storage guy with a bit of swiftui on the side so basically linux sysadmin stuff - terminal, browser, vm, containers, etc - nothing you can't do on any other laptop haha

I would get something with at least 16 gigs of RAM. 8 gigs of RAM is fine if you are a light user but when you start to multi-task, it really shows up. If you need more, of course you'd already know. About Air / Pro, I would always pick the Pro just because it's more bang for buck since you are already paying a premium. These are all very general recommendations until you tell me your usecase.
I am somewhat getting in your shoes! Android studio, xCode, dockers and so on...
