Atx power supply to bench power supply conversion

Cheap Bench power supplies in the market seems to crappy so I was thinking of converting my extra atx pc power supply into a variable bench supply. I already bought the breakout board with 3.3v, 5volt and 12volt out. But there are videos where people make variable bench supply using some kind of buck converter but they are very expensive in India. Is there a work around to make it into a variable bench supply?

Don't think so, buck and boost converter are quite cheap. Some with larger varying voltages might be 300-400. Check robu.in or other such sites
 
I made a small bench power supply with a DP20V2A buck converter and it worked pretty well. Then I built another one using a RD6006 360 watt module with dedicated switch mode power supply which worked great as well. It depends on what do you need the power supply for. I have seen plenty of hobby project videos of converting ATX power supplies to bench power supplies but total build complexity, time needed and materials are just a time sink for a inferior product. If its a nice converted ATX bench supply then you would have spent far more than a simple buck converter.

Also what do you need a power supply for. If its a simple 3.3V,5V and 12V supply then a PD trigger would solve your issue much easily. A simple powerbank or charger and your are done.

I think I need other voltages too for diagnosing electronic or testing projects

I didn't buy it in India. Bought it directly from Aliexpress shipped to Singapore back in 2020.
Bought from OEM direct. But they dont ship to India.

Will need to add case, switching power supply and other things to complete it so total might be close to 12-14k for fully built unit.

Bought it after watching this. EEVblog has made me spend quite a lot before as well.

that is one of the good buck boost converter supply for the price but can go 5020 model as well.

Get a liner power supply like KORAD KA3005D, 30V 5A. @4k, very famous in mobile repairing and very good for tinkerers. I bought this few years ago and still working good.

This is robust high current supply, with various short circuit protections, and it is linear, meaning very low noise on output less than 100mV peak to peak.

All cheaper supplies than this in the market are not good. KORAD has set the entry level standard. You will also see the same power supply with various different names, because re-sellers buy in bulk from the manufacturer and ask for their name to printed on it.

I have a expensive power supply with only 24pin atx cable. So I thought I could convert it into cheap bench supply by spending 1000-1500 or so. If I spend 4k then I would go for yihua rework station
 
I would also recommend getting a proper lab bnch power supply instead of using an ATX Power supply. You get much more features and it will be much more reliable that converted ATX power supply. I also won't trust my tinkering skills for something that has live AC power involved.
