Apple Announces Redesigned Mac Mini With M4 and M4 Pro Chips

Just one point , more semantics than anything else.
A 40gbps enclosure is expected to give a theoretical 5 MB/s (bits vs bytes)
In reality , you can expect 3-4 due to overheads so I presume you are getting 3.5GB/s and not 3.5gbps.

With laptops, no easy way really.
Tiny 2230 enclosures are cheap now but they max out at 800-900 MB/s and also slow down if doing sustained writes.

Having said that, with both phones and laptops, I shifted to icloud long ago and just leave the optimize storage option on.
That way, something like even 128 on phones or 256 on laptops has been more than perfectly fine for me while continuing to retaining access to all my data whenevr needed.

Of course, this won’t work if your use case involves, for example, handling lots of large video files on the go.
But for the majority of scenarios, this does work very well

Yeah dont want to pay apple. Have 1tb one drive but even that is too much hassle. SD card wont work well?

SD card will be slow and unreliable..
There is nothing wring apple’s cloud plans though.. The pricing is at par (in some cases cheaper) than google and it integrates very well with the rest of the system natively in the classic Apple way.
As a user, you don’t need to anything extra except making sure the optimize local storage flag is turned on

New finding that shows the atrocious pricing of Apple upgrades. For the price of upgrading to 2TB, you get a PS5 Pro with 2TB storage and still have 100$ in hand.

Yup thats has always been the case with Apple with upgrades being very expensive. 1tb and 32gb would cost the same as 3 base config machines. But the base config is so much better this time with 16GB ram.

Most of the cost is probably going to the purple dyed silk gloves the assembler has to wear while switching out the part because of his/her senstive skin. (this is not true)

Did you know you needed to crush about 20,000 snail shells to get 1g of purple dye? (this is true)

Specifically Tyrian purple.

Now guess where they put the power button.
At the bottom
If you have used any Mac for any extended period in the last 15 years, you would not have found this to be an issue at all.
The power button is almost never used on a Mac - maybe once in a few months if at all.

Unfortunately Windows has indoctrinated everyone to shutdown / power up their systems every single day with a religious zeal.
A desktop like the Mini will see the power button used on day 1 and probably a year or so later after that

PS: It was hard to resist the temptation so I got myself one y'day.
Al I would say is that YT reviews are accurate for once.
The machine is super snappy at multitasking and throwing even bucket loads at it doesn’t seem to impact it
I opened tonnes of tabs , mail and excel windows - no impact on responsiveness

Installed Cyberpunk and Metro LL remastered on it . While install was on, cmd tabbed back to other windows and same responsiveness
Then ran CP2077 and while it was running, tabbed back to other windows and same responsiveness. even tabbing back to game was like switching to a general purpose window

Best part is that the games aren’t even native.. and photoanalysis daemon was still analyzing the rather large photo library (close to 100K pics/vids) while all this was on

Though I am fully into apple ecosystem, I do not side with this logic that we do not turn our computers off and they take so less power. The practice of windows PCs being shutdown is good practice.
Lets say Mac mini takes 0.5W in sleep mode. If it is going to be off for 8 hours (say), that 4W per night. 100 of them are wasting 400W every night. 1 lakh of them are wasting 4L W every night day in day out if they are left on. You may say this is flawed logic.

When Apple removed charger from the box, you know what they said?

Removing the charger and EarPods from the iPhone box allowed 70% more devices to fit on a pallet. More boxes on a pallet would allow Apple to ship more phones to users at one time. As a result, using smaller boxes would allow Apple to reduce yearly carbon emissions by 2 million metric tons, the company said. That is equivalent to taking 500,000 cars off the road.
While charging cables are still included in the iPhone box, it is the main part of the charger, the power adapter, that has been removed. Apple explains that manufacturing the adapters uses large amounts of plastic, copper, tin, and zinc. By not providing these by default and therefore reducing the numbers that are distributed overall, it has been able to avoid mining and producing the materials that would have been required.

By this logic, we have to consider the collective wastage of power. There should not be two standards.

If you are going that route then You also need to consider the the shutdown/ boot peak loads.
If I burnt 4W a night on idle, the typical 150-200W peak loads on a traditional win desktop even for a few mins at startup & shutdown are also more than offsetting it
(as against a constant very low load and resuming back to idle loads in the morning.)

In any case, I do not turn off my systems because of the convenience it offers. My phone is an always on device, so is my tab.
I moved to the same model for PCs 10-15 years ago. I close and open the lid on my laptop several times a day and I cannot go back to the shutdown/ start loop ever - it wastes too much time and 4W a day is small price to pay for it (and the alternate also does add to your power consumption profile).

10 cores and 16gb in the base model! Strange that the iMac got the 8 core M4, maybe that's the Facebook/Point-of-Sale machine.

The practice of windows PCs being shutdown is good practice.

The powering down and powering up has an detrimental effect to components over time. Most workplaces put systems to sleep after a 8 hour workday, it's rarely a full power-off. That's part of the reason why 2016-era off-lease Lenovo/HP/Dell PCs are still reliable and continue to be resold by refurbishers today, even when they were built to the most basic standards. And why you don't find many, if any, custom desktops from that time — they mostly ended up dying from old age.

1 lakh of them are wasting 4L W

That's Rs 4000 per night at Rs 10 per kWh.

How many man-hours are spent getting 100,000 employees to reach around and turn on their systems every day?

Let's say 12 seconds for power-on vs 2 seconds for a mouse wiggle for a time penalty of 10 seconds, with most of it being spent reaching/fumbling for the bottom-mounted power button. For 100,000 employees, that's one million seconds or 277 hours.

Unless if you're paying/being paid less than 15 rupees an hour (4000/277), it doesn't make sense to turn off your system.

Personally, I haven't turned off my desktop since the late 90s. It's only extended power cuts that reset my uptime stats.

Peak load for milliseconds during boot health check is similar to PC running without shutting down for hours? Also, a Mac takes 7-8W during boot up. The whole boot process itself is under a minute, even if you think Mac runs on peak load during entire boot process.

Bhai, I am strictly talking about Macs. Not at all interested in turning this into windows vs Mac. How you use your laptop and how you use your desktop are two different things. We all know how fast a Mac boots and how less energy it takes while booting so your logic of 200W on PC holds no ground here. Even if I have to bring that into discussion.

Apply same calculation. A PC that is shutdown vs PC that is put in sleep mode running all night.

This is just speculation. I have been using PCs since 2002 and the only component failure I had was memory failure last weekend. Single component that failed in 20+ years is enough proof that shutting down is not detrimental. Now do not try to find those clickbait YT videos to prove your point. Colleges, schools and even many companies shutdown computers and they are all fine. I hope you are not confused between servers and desktops.

Bhai, let's not go there. People pouncing on work the moment they touch computer happens only when there is production bug that is causing major issue. People who come to office do chit-chat first and then use computer, even if it is just booting up. Or they turn it on (from sleep or from off), grab a coffee and start working. Also, this is not about how much it costs. More man hours are lost in coffee talk and small talk then on 30 seconds waiting for PC to boot.
It is more about iSheep blindly supporting the power button saying they never turn it off and at the same time supporting apple for removing power brick saying it is good for environment. My point is on this dual tongue nature of iSheep.

Salute Aye Aye Captain GIF

No wonder why there are so many power cuts in my area :D

This has always been the case with the apple fans...whatever apple does is right...
1. when it had lightning cable for years....it was the best decision ever for the best cables the universe has seen....when it was forced to switched to usb c...best decision ever
2. When apple removed charger in the name of environment...apple is the best company ever that will single handedly protect earth...now no power button....apple is the best company ever as they have made computers that run without power!!
3. when steve jobs said stylus is for losers...what a visionary the best human ever born...when apple launched pencil copying samsung....what a pencil! truly visionary changed how human hands work forever
etc. etc.

basically dont believe anything fans say...if you want a real and objective answer

It's always been the case that the people who disapprove of Apple's decisions end up being more vocal than the ones to whom those decisions are a non-issue.

When a company makes stupid design choices, disapproval goes off the roof. That power button on bottom was stupid. Defending that is, well, side effect of inhaling too much of copium?

When many asked why not at the front, copium inhaling iSheep said it will look ugly. I was like 'BC, there are two type-c ports and an 3.5mm jack right there.' Look at that LED indicator. A power button with a white ring is impossible?

iSheep when Apple releases iLatch, a new accessory that makes powering on your Mac mini easier (for 99$)

The people who say they use a Mac mini as their main computer — we're saying it's a non-issue. I mean, it's just two people here in this thread, but that's what we feel. I would say @superczar represents a typical mac user more than myself, because I have more systems running than I have plates or cups.

Defending/copium/iSheep — this is inflammatory language and it's puzzling. The power button could be anywhere, we just don't care because we don't use it?
