Android Is wireless charging a good slow charging option for better battery longevity?

Back when I had a lot of old chargers I would use the 5-10 W ones for overnight charging, believing it's slightly better for the battery than the 60+ watts that is common now. But now, I have thrown away all old electronic stuff in Diwali cleanup (bad move).

I'm thinking of getting a 15W wireless charger for overnight charging but I'm getting mixed information as to whether it will produce more or less heat than the fast wired charging. The general recommendation seems to be that wireless will create more heat than wired (due to lower efficiency) but that is for same wattage.

Will 15W wireless charging create less heat than 68W fast wired charging? If you guys have any experiences with this, please share.
 
Nothing to back my point other than some personal experience.

All these batteries will degrade for sure and the talks about fast charging and wireless charging destroy batteries that all comes down to manufacturers battery quality.


At most you can do is charge them till 80% . This option seems to be proven option of battery longevity.
Rest is all upto luck and quality.
This is why many companies are giving these options.

With wireless charging, you have heat from the connected charger to convert AC to DC. The charging pad converts DC to AC which generates heat. The induction coil on the phone receives the inductive current and converts it to DC, again generating heat.

The inefficiency of it all makes my head spin. However, you still have multiple heat sources close to the phone than you would with a wired charger. Most certified chargers try to control the temperature but the inefficiency means you are exposing the battery to higher heat for a much longer time compared to a wired charger.

A low wattage wired charger is definitely the best option in terms of heat. A fast charger might generate heat up to the highest limit but then it also disconnects much quicker than a wireless charger which keeps heat stressing the battery longer.

Fast charging degrades battery because of the heat it produces.

With wireless charging, you are getting all the adverse effects of fast charging, minus the fast charging.
(I call it a reverse-Blade situation).

Some wireless chargers don't work if you use a lower wattage charger. For 15W wireless charging, you would probably need a 25W charger. For wired charging, you would get 15W output out of 16-17W input. Most of the difference is the heat your battery will be subjected to.

Short version, your battery will be at a much more elevated temperature compared to a wired charger. It will be less than a fast charger, but then the fast charger will disconnect in minutes, whereas the wireless charger will keep the battery at a high temperature for a longer duration.

In my humble opinion, wired charging is a better choice for battery longevity compared to wireless charging.
With wired charging, the adapter stands at the socket, so its heat doesn’t affect the battery in any way. On the other hand, with a wireless charger, it attaches to the phone, causing the battery to heat up itself. Furthermore, the phone’s frame absorbs additional heat from the induction coils in the phone and the charger.

Easy enough to test if you get an app like 3C Battery manager. It will log battery temperature on a regular interval and this is how I realised I wanted charging to be no more than 10 W.

On Samsung you can disable fast charging so it will work with any charger.

As for your topic title run the same test with wireless charging and compare with other configurations.

My max acceptable temp is 38°C while either browsing or watching on wifi. If it goes higher. I usually stop what I'm doing and restart the phone. Many times this fixes hotter charging for some reason.

As a rule reboot the phone at least once a week if not more often

I never bothered with wireless charging :happy:
