Amazon S3 for personal file backups

Hey everyone,


I'm planning to back up a few gigs of my photos and documents on Amazon S3. Since I'll probably never need to access them, I'm looking for the cheapest storage option. I'm totally fine with slow transfer rates and even waiting times if it keeps costs down.


I know S3 is typically used by businesses, but does anyone know if it's feasible for personal use? If yes, could you point me to a simple and practical guide for setting it up and managing it?


Any advice or tips would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
 
They need Credit Card info for signing up. Once your free quota is done, they will automatically charge your card.
For cloud backup, I think you are better off looking at the Office 365 Go thread and using the OneDrive storage that comes with the subscription -
 
You don't really need object storage to store personal data, It's way too overkill, plus you'll end up paying.

Get any cloud storage (Google Drive, One Drive, PCloud, ICloud, Dropbox) and a lot of them have pretty generous free tier, Try this comparision table - https://comparisontabl.es/cloud-storage/
I'd suggest you back it up at a couple of places for redundancy like Filen (20 GB free using referral) and Mega / Koofr.

If you still want to use S3 as a storage, Try looking into Cloudflare R2, It's way cheaper and has the same API, plus you'll get 10 GB free.

The simplest way to use it would be using the Web interface but it's not that intuituve (for AWS S3). You can use CyberDuck for a better UI. These platforms aren't built for user facing storage.

If you are going to use it for data that you need less frequently, you can go with S3 S3 Glacier Deep Archive which offers storage at ~$1 per TB. For retrievals, you will have to wait upto 12 hours. You can create bucket and use something like rclone, to manage the storage. It will allow you to encrypt the data as well if required
 
I pay my S3 bill with my debit card.

Google One may be better option, it's more user friendly, and costs 130 a month for 100GB.

Instead of 1tb is there an option to get more TBs. I know you might say buy 500*3 or so but does MS offers any 2tb per user plan?
 
And how does MEGA compares with onedrive in terms of pricing and data as the later is a priority.

Mega is fast, but their bandwidth is limited as compared to Onedrive. As for peeking into data, anyone can do that with any storage providers. If you are concerned about data, you should probably use local storage or encrypt everything that your store on cloud
