Kindles have been out of stock on Amazon for a while now - I remember trying to buy one a year ago and seeing its unavailable. Does anyone know when or if they'll be back in stock?

From reading reddit threads it looks like the old ones were discontinued to make way for the new gen, but then for whatever reason the launch was delayed.

On a side note, it looks like that was the perfect window for Kobo to make an appearance.
 
Same here, been trying to buy a new Paperwhite for close to a year now . New stock of Kindles arrived earlier this year, but they seemed to be plagued with QC issues / or are refurbished. Some people say its supply chain issues, some people say its Amazon gearing up for a newer gen.. But its been going on for 2-3 years now. So I doubt its those things. Amazon slowing plugging Kindle sales in India seems more plausible. Why, no idea.

Amazon is also making it difficult to buy ebooks via desktop or the app (limited payment methods). Something is up for sure.

I've been looking at Kobos too, but they aren't perfect either- particularly speed. Do you have one? What do you think?

I think it is mainly to do with limited sales in India and not worth it for Amazon to import and provide support. I went with a Bigme B751C last year because at the end of the day it uses the same Kaleido 3 display as the Colorsoft and the Kobo Libra Colour. It costs less if you can manage to source it from China while having more processing power and a lot of flexibility on account of running Android. Also, easy to root as it uses older Mediatek SoC.

I am also looking for the Android readers with color display. Have you ordered Bigme B751C. How did you ordered and how you handled the shipping and customs,

I happened to purchase it during 11/11 from AliExpress and shipped it to a relative who came back to India in December. I know some people have been getting items from Alibaba as some sellers are willing to ship even single quantity units for relatively "costlier" items, though I suppose customs will depend on the price declaration which you can negotiate.
