Well, i would suggest you to go for either Ubuntu (Linux) or some other Linux os since they are basically very small and very fast or else go for Stripped version of Xp (tiny XP) or else go for Win 7 tiny Rev 02 (700 mb). I have personally used win 7 tiny rev 02 on my laptop and it works wonders.
