I can vouch for the D5100. Great cam. Offtopic but if you all you are going to use it for is basic stuff like holiday photography , landscapes.. you really don't need a DSLR. Get a good P&S , easier to carry around.. good image quality for home use , easier to toss around in the bag.

WP7 does let set stuff run in the background. I always have Google Latitude running , streaming music and stuff. Its not nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. And i'm using a Note , Lumia 800 , N9 alongside so can't really be biased here
