If priced similar or less to 9600 GT, HD3870 would be a great choice because of its high quality video rendering as well as 5.1 surround audio. The performance in games is similar, give or take a few games. The HD3850 seems to be the biggest loser here. Just my 2 cents.
for me yes it did make a difference man (see my sig and the mobo i am using), i am able to hear low frequency sounds that were not noticeable earlier on onboard audio (Pink Floyd rocks absolutely). also now there's no distortion when the sound is maxxed out which wasn't the case earlier. Bass...
