    Monitoring Software for LAN

Can you tell me the network topology of your college LAN? Is there any kind of hardware or appliance firewall installed? Blocking ports or traffic at the perimeter before it leaves for the internet would be the ideal way of taking care of things. If there is no perimeter blocking device then...

What is the result that you get when you ping some other host on the LAN? On top of my head I believe its a physical connection issue.Have you checked continuity between the two end of the crimped CAT5 cable? Check it with a Multi-meter & fix the cable if required i.e re- crimp it.

They sure want to expand their network but if i'm not wrong then ADSL is distance dependent i.e distance between the line connection & the telephone exchange should not be more than 18,000 feet[5,460 meters] to be precise. So it wont help if their exchange is within the specified distance...

Yeps its the w32.blaster worm using the RPC DCOM vulnerability of unpatched systems. But according to me your AV problem was because maybe there is a setting in Kaspersky which blocks internet activity upon request[which is highly unlikely] but you may as well give a glance over the settings...

Just make sure the "permissions" set for the shared folders are appropriate. Most of the times its this simple things which cause problem. Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled under the TCP/IP properties? If not then enable & look under network places if they show up.

    StingRay Hardware Firewall

If they are talking of Deep Packet Inspection then I dont know how it doesnt have a engine which has to be updated with the signature from the database along with heuristic analysis. This baffles me the most,I've not seen this in action so I cant comment but the jargon that such products use...

Yeps go for a switch anytime.Although it wont make much of a difference while gaming w.r.t collisions domains as experienced in a hub.A switch is a worth buy considering the fact that you may as well share resources & the cost difference is not much. With that being said All the best !

I meant to say you could use PVC pipe for protecting agaisnt outdoor factors.Sounds lame & maybe no such thing exists in the indian market but a little trial & error should help you in deciding. Also earlier I forgot,I would advise to do a survey & deploy the maximum end point first & notice...
