Don't discount just using pen and paper. I think sometimes we get stuck on using technology, but for many use-cases, the act of writing it down is more important than the medium in which you are writing.

Shift+Arrow goes character by character. Shift+Control+Arrow goes word by word.

So I often need to highlight previous word and edit it, when writing documents, etc. For that, I use SHIFT+CONTROL+LEFT_ARROW. With this keyboard, I had to do SHIFT+CONTROL+Fn+A, which took a fair bit of brain cycles to operate regularly.
