16GBx2 DDR5 Laptop RAM (SO-DIMM)

,

Hello TE Community!

Looking for 2 sticks of 16GB DDR5 Laptop RAM. If I can’t get the desktop RAM, might as well upgrade the laptop. Need to get to 32GB on one device at least.

Please DM me your (sane) offers.

Thanks!

I have a 16gb DDR5 Laptop Ram, came with ThinkPad, so still 6 months warranty remaining. I’ve upgraded.

PM for details

Deal agreed with @drkrack for the 16gb stick.

Looking for one more stick

I would like to inform, that dual channel memory does not work well at all, and has none of the benefits of using 2 sticks, if you use two ram sticks that are different models, you need identical model for both sticks, to see the benefits.

Wait, what? Dual channel works with same capacity memory(natively, non-flex) and the faster memory stick would downclock automatically to meet the slower ram - both in terms of frequency as well as timings. So both would operate at the lower frequency in dual channel mode.

Is this not the case?

Not really. But the performance difference is not as pronounced as you might think, especially depending on the tasks a general user does.

Okay, I’ll probably stick with Flex mode for now. Can’t seem to find another stick.

ITT: BigMemory’s propaganda in effect.

Just do a memory bandwidth test! First with both 8gb sticks and then again with one 8gb and one 16gb stick.

Post results too, please.

Will do, waiting for the ram to be shipped and delivered. Still looking for one more stick in the interim.

Is this because of different timings?

Is it still a problem if both are same capacity of ddr5 4800mhz? (Particularly talking about laptop sodimm rams)

yes the latency is one issue but if one is dual rank and other is single rank it will have stability potentially causing the system to hang or crash

I’m going to check what I have in my laptop. I do know that I also have Samsung memory in my laptop (moto book) so chances are those should match with the ThinkPad one I bought.

Is it still a problem if both sticks aren’t exactly same but both are ddr5, 1Rx8, have same speed (4800mhz) and same capacity?

You might see a small diffrence in performance compared to same sticks

Oh  my laptop came with 2x8gb ram but planning to upgrade to 24 or 32. But finding two actual same sticks in the current market at considerable price is quite tough.

I got one crucial 16gb ddr5 4800 already, will try getting another one from the crucial too

I thought as long as both same capacity, dual channel works in full, with same speed the latency will be same too and with same rank, there shouldn’t be any issues.

The price you paid for the 16gb stick is exceptional by today’s standards. Even 24gb is enough to get us past this pandemic

24gb is quite balanced for today’s usage unless you do something heavy but I wanted two to have identical sticks for dual channel since currently have 8+8 and after one stick, I’m left with 8+16=24gb but flex mode

In the early days of DDR4 laptops, they came with 8gb on board with a single memory slot that you can configure, from the manufacturer, with upto a 16gb stick.

So you could buy and use a laptop with 8gb+16gb memory without issues and with full warranty.

But then the memory mafia got involved and (presumably) threatened supply of chips so laptops went back to having two slots of memory.

This was to allow the memory companies to sell you matching sticks.

But you never needed matching sticks to get dual channel performance, not since DDR2 for intel and DDR1 for AMD.

And it’s an easy test for anyone to conduct. Check bandwidth with two similar sticks and two dissimilar sticks.

Yeah, I had read something similar like this. Also, these things have improved a lot with ddr5 RAMs. I believe the factors to consider for the optimal performance of dual channel should be(both being from good brand and ddr5 sodimm): Same size > same chip config (1Rx8 or 2Rx8 or 1Rx16) > same speed.

Rest should be fine. Most important factor is definitely the same size and chip config I guess.

Still looking for one more RAM stick!
