4x1GB or 2x2GB?

Like the title say, which would be better? Buying 2x1GB now and upgrading later with the same pair or getting 2x2GB now?

I was looking at these particular models:

  1. G.SKILL 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

  2. Patriot Viper 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

  3. OCZ Platinum 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

  4. G.Skill - F3-12800CL7D-2GBHZ (1GB x 2)

I’m on a tight budget but might manage the 2x2gb kits if the performance will be better than the 1x4GBs.

Every one feel free to give their opinions and u can try to change my mind about my choices too as long as the pricing is near about the ones above AND it can be sourced here in India/ from any of the dealers here

you DO have a 64bit OS right?

But, of course :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: .Getting Vista Business x64.

tight budget ??

the options uve posted have prices of 400 $+ and u say tight budget

ohk so they are DDR3 modules ..i thought u r spending so much for DDR2..

anyways i have no idea on which one is better ..all look good to me :face_with_tongue:

lets see what others have to say..

by the way i think you should go for 2 X 2GB..

OT

one more thing…why do DDR3 RAMS have such loose timings like 7-7-7-18 and all compared to what DDR2 have ?? i mean i was wondering doesnt this affect the speed and performance..?

how fast/better is DDR3 better than the 800/1066 Mhz DDR2 ?

i thought that DDR3 was new..and would take some more time to mature..

The speed makes up for the latencies and the higher speeds with DDR3 can help you really push your systems esp with the upcoming 45nms.

Is it wise to buy DDR3 at this stage? It is in still evolving phase… If you buy a 4GB stick now then some time later you’ll have to buy another 4GB stick of same spec (which may become obsolete soon since the frequencies are changing rapidly). If you buy 2*2GB then too price will fall rapidly some time later and you’ll have to face depreciation from 20K (US price now) to say 5K (price sometime later)…
I would have put a hold on DDR3 and got a MoBo having both DDR 2 & 3 support (which may be difficult to find).
Indeed, this is a tough decision and take it only after carefully thinking over each pro & con of DDR3…
20K is a huge sum for some. If you think it is affordable to you then go for it!!! (Ohh, I used the banned phrase, now someone will get mad at me :frowning: )

2x2GB is better as it overclocks much better than 4x1GB & that i have tested myself :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Peeps got 4x1Gb as they had 2x1Gb and buying another pair of the same worked out cheaper as 2x2GB kits were pricey then.

Now the cost difference is minimal, if any.
I think 2x2GB is the norm for DDR2 now, esp for Vista users- moreso for gamers. :face_with_tongue:

Dual channel is always better than single channel, the bandwidth really helps on memory intensive tasks.

suggest me will 1x4gb consume more power than 2x2gb ?

With reference to context, huh???

Oops. I thought he was getting a single 4GB stick..

Ok, will try to stretch my budget for the 2x2gb kits. I think I’ll go for the 2x2GB G-Skill kits (464.99 US dallars). Lower latencies than the Patriot and priced cheaper too.

Anybody think I should go for some other kit at the same price point? I’m having probs browsing the Newegg site.

Thanks everyone  !

Happens- cool.
4x1GB implies 4 sticks of 1GB and one stick of 4GB would have been denoted as 1x4GB. :face_with_tongue:
This had happened in a previous thread on the same topic. :face_with_tongue:
Back then, it as a no brainer as there were no 4GB DDR2 sticks available, but are they now?? :ashamed:

Hey, make sure u get the sticks with the right chips and don’t just consider as per specs.
Sometimes a kit with higher latencies at stock but better/preferred chips clocks higher or runs much tighter timings at the hands of a skilled user.
Ya, Newegg is acting weird here too- can barely get a page or 2 open- stuck after that. :frowning:

there was yesterday but gone now

How do I find out what chips are being used? Anybody see a better deal on Newegg? Newegg’s still giving probs here

It will depend on your application & Budget…

If in next 2 years you need more than 4 GB ram then you can think of…

else 2 X 2GB is sufficient..

^^why doesn’t anybody read the whole thread  ? No offence@amdlover, but I’ve already mentioned that I have made up my mind on 2x2gb. Help me decide which 2x2GB kit to get!

i found the gskill kit the most vfm 1600MHz DDR3 Kit on newegg :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

^^ same here..
i guess you are talkin about this one
