Airtel BB - Not able to use completely custom SSID or Turn OFF WiFi

I took a new Airtel BB connection (Xtreme Fibre). Everything was super quick and prompt. But later, I discovered that I can only modify the SSID after Airtel_XXXXXX, which I found very annoying. Secondly, there was no option to turn OFF WiFi.
Not giving the user to manage these things, I really felt very disappointed
Wanna hear your opinion on this

Even I cannot change my BSNL FTTH SSID and turn off my internet unless I switch it off.

Either ask them to put the router in bridge mode and connect to your own router.
Else buy a GPON ONT and set it up and use it as you want. Search TE, multiple threads are already running on the same and many users already have their own ONT and Router setup.

At one of my offices, we are doing this, but my point is that it is unfair not to let the customer edit or use it the way he wants, other than these complex additional expense setup ?

which router you have got?

Get it bridged and use your own router. To get it bridged, the technicians and their manager will try to upsell you static ip, don’t get it if you do not need it. On twitter and other social media tag the airtel account incase the technicians are persistent to sell you the static ip; say that you absolutely do not need it and need it bridged on dynamic ip only on [your choice of port]. If even then they do not budge, raise grievance in cpgrams website

I switch off the wifi on the airtel router and then connect another router after the ISP router which handles everything - dhcp, wifi, etc. on a different subnet. That helps without dealing with Airtel customer care.. Haven’t tried the bridge method which i have seen few people being able to manage

I agree. When customer is paying for the service, then why make it so customer unfriendly? Not able to put the ONT in the bridge mode is bad enough. But not being able to switch off Wi-Fi is just another level of hooliganism. I faced the same issue with my Jio ONT.

It

doesn’t have any model number on it, but i believe it’s a Nokia modem router with custom firmware

we all should unite against this and let airtel know our concern

Same here… tried something’s but didn’t work… following to know if somebody has some answer…. It’s their way to promote themselves in apartments…

This is not the case with my old Nokia modem that I use at home, there I have full control on my modem router. It’s like Airtel started copying things from Jio

ah it is an airfiber. they are much more restrictive with those compared to the actual fiber connection which itself is more locked down nowadays.

have you tried accessing the router device directly at 192.168.1.1 from the browser on any device connected to the router (through wifi or over ethernet) ? Usually the username is admin and password is also admin. (Your browser will warn about insecure http connection, but you can ignore it as you are connecting to your own router)

It has all the options to rename the entire SSID and almost all other settings. (Go to Network Tab and then Wireless (2.4) or (5GHz).
You will also find option/toggle to enable/disable the WiFi there.

Hope it helps.

No, it’s an Airtel Xtreme optical fibre connection. This is the new modem router they are giving

As told by the customer support person In this new modem router we don’t have web access. The only access is through the Airtel Thanks App. And in the thanks app we only have option to see the connected clients, modify SSID (only after the Airtel_xxxxxx), reboot router etc. No option to turn off WiFi

Where is the fibre optic cable? Is it hidden?

So you can’t even access http://192.168.1.1 in this?

It should be possible, use https not http. https://192.168.1.1
Username is admin and password is ideally your gpon serial number which is in the backside of the Nokia router. Something like NKOT…

it was there in older models.. but in the new version its completely disabled

Wow. I thought the router they gave me was restrictive. No web access seem completely screwed up. On another note, have you tried bypassing the router using xpon? I am thinking of trying that but seeing mixed reviews.
