I wish they had the same energy to round up the rapists
Oh no. It involves hoomans na so they won’t act quickly.
The court also warned that if any person or organisation comes in the way of picking up stray dogs, action will be taken. The court stressed that infants and young children should not, at any cost, fall prey to stray dogs.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta during the hearing had sought “something to be done” against the “menace of stray dog bites”.
“We can’t sacrifice our children merely because few individuals feel that they are animal lovers or something,” he said.
Wow. What a wonderful move. Should be done in the entire country if possible.
I wonder if this is possible permanently. Maybe someone will leave dogs or new pups on streets and the issue comes back again. Only time will tell.
Its so easy, almost natural, for people to be cruel ..
Same for cows please
I know what you mean. I blame everything on Govt.’s inability to maintain dog population via spaying and neutering. They always pick the easy way out.
Yeah, atleast no more cows on the roads blocking the way and causing traffic issues. They deserve shelters and good food.
The initial news was to move them outside delhi with nowhere mentioning of shelters. What I know is its simply a give and take task like exchange strays across borders of states, cities, areas and this practice is pretty common intra-city under municipal bodies.
Also, get ready for those stray animal lovers to bark-in and try stop this act. I would say handover all stray dogs to such animal lovers and ask them to take full responsibility of them and I bet they wont even be able to fulfill 30% of it and they might end up abandoning them on noida/gurugram highways or in bushes.
As they say, its easy to bark and create a chaos but not to be silent and maintain peace or at least clean the mess..
Hope it works but I have low expectations. As long as there is trash on the streets there is going to be someone to eat it. I just don’t see how Delhi can remove all stray dogs without deploying a massive number of people for this task all the time.
Dude, what the hell?
Yea, turns out i am going to bark in.
for context: I have 7 indies at home and I do what I can to rescue injured or sick dogs and cats, treat them and get them adopted. I have kept the ones who didn’t get adopted. I haven’t abandoned a single one.
My question to you is, why do you have to be cruel?
I and almost any animal lover completely agree that there shouldn’t be stray dogs on the road. No stray animal be it dogs, cats, cows, horses. None.
My entire goal in life is to achieve that. But I want to do it humanely. There are countries that have done it in the past. It will take consistent effort over time but it is possible. The effort for so many years has been half-hearted.
Roads are for humans and cars. Dogs should be in homes being cuddled. Horses and cows should have shelter and fields. We just as a people have to decide that our morals matter when doing things. The journey is as important as the destination.
You don’t have to be cruel.
If things happen as claimed, thousands will be rounded up and crammed in cages. Disease will spread and many will die in agony. Many will starve to death. It is just so much pain! It is so much suffering! how could you wish for that?
I’m attaching some pictures of my babies that I cant live without. They each have so much personality and are so unique like kids. They are just so happy to see you even if you step away for 5 minutes. They have comforted me when my father died and I was suicidal.
No one is asking you to do anything. Just don’t be asshole?
Please.
Anybody who is against this has never had to come back home late at night. Or been a delivery boy late at night.
People feed them in the day time and are never on the scary side of them where you can get mauled (or even killed if you are a kid). So its easy to then go on “oh its animal cruelty”.
This should be done mandatorily on pan india basis. These filthy creatures have no place on the road. Been saying that for many years, but stopped after realising this sh!thole of a country will obviously care more for savage animals over human beings.
Street dog feeders who feed but leave these beings on the road without bothering the subsequent consequences should also be jailed. We all know why they feed them in the first place
Where you see someone being cruel here? Did I say to kill them?
Just fyi I too have a labrador, an adopted hybrid german shepherd, alsatian, an adopted stray cat, lots of pigeons, parrots and fishes at my native.
Look at the larger picture..everyday increasing stray bites esp. to the kids, rabies, barking at night, spreading diseases and so on. I just highlighted that whoever has objection are free to adopt them and take full responsibility. Just like how its is happening for pigeons, they are a menace a threat to our health and is the same for dogs. Merely sterilization isn’t gonna help in fact it reversely affects their mind and they become mad and start biting around creating threat.
Merely becoming emotional isn’t gonna help. Such strict actions were to be taken decades ago and today everything would had been under control.
Families abandoning their aged pets should be penalized and jailed, it should be that much strict.
I have been bitten by a rabies dog when I was a kid, I daily get annoyed by their incessant crying and barking in my society premises, it had even bitten our security guards as well. I witness their acts daily and have been through, I stand with the govt and have clearly stated, those who oppose better adopt them in numbers like kids and raise them healthily full-fledged!
Dog biting needs to stop.
They need to be off the streets, agreed.
First though we need to acknowledge that is happening also due to the way we are treating them. Once a dog is picked up for sterilization, they aren’t left back in the same area they know and have a pack.
Imagine being dumped in an unknown area, starving, a lot of pain because you just underwent a major surgery. Unknown surroundings, none of the people you know and other dogs will think you will take their food away. They’d be so terrified. Can you really blame them? Wouldn’t you be snapping at anyone and everyone around you?
And yea, i am doing what you said. I have adopted and am taking care of as many as i can afford to. Others will too. Lets make a plan to rehouse them. Lets pick them off the street and resettle them in shelters where they are taken care of. People can come and adopt them.
But it needs to be done right. We need to do something and urgently. Just that the current plan is worse than simply killing them. Cant we remove street dogs without torturing them to death?
No, i don’t know. Why do we feed them? tell me
Very well said.
It’s people like you who keep the soul of India alive. We are one of the few nations that believes in the sanctity of all life. Our religions show us that Gods, and humans can be reborn in any form, so it should be natural for us to be kind to all our fellow earthlings.
What the court has ordered is stupid, irresponsible, and is going to cost us upwards of Rs.30,000 crore for Delhi alone. If only our governments had spent a small fraction of that amount towards funding animal sterilization and vaccination, instead of leaving it to volunteers for the last 20-25 years, we would never have reached this stage.
Instead we’re going to create a world where it’s okay to target the weakest, voiceless, fellow Indians, who make up the fabric of our nation. The lesson any youngster is going to take away from this, is that it’s alright to be led astray by a media frenzy, and that a mob of ill informed people can sway the courts.
Some facts - rabies deaths have come down ever since the ABC program was initiated, even though both human and animal populations have exploded, and the program was woefully underfunded.
Also, hospitals report all scratches as bites - so a person who was treated for a minor wound, caused by a playful dog will also count in the total dog bite tally.
The rabies course is 3 to 5 injections. There is no clarity on whether each dose is counted as a bite, or the entire treatment counts as one. So, the dog bite numbers may by inflated.
And finally. Yes. I am an animal lover. Proud to be one. I’ve got 1 indie dog, and 2 indie cats at home. I’ve looked after dozens of stray dogs throughout my life, and have yet to encounter an aggressive one. I’ve interacted with hundreds, if not thousands of street dogs across the length and breadth of this country, and they’ve all been friendly, without me offering any of them any food.
In any interaction you are going to get back what you put out. If you’re an aggressive, hateful person, people, and animals are going to be treat you accordingly. Animals who are constantly ill-treated are going to become aggressive. A few attacks cannot, and should not be the reason for damning an entire population. Each attack should have been studied, and the cause for the aggression determined.
But off course, there is no justice for the weak and voiceless in our land. Yet. We can still change that.
Anyway, since the Supreme Court has ordered one impossible task, there’s no reason for it not to ask for more.
Please join me in my petitions for asking the Supreme Court to force the DRDO to make the Kaveri engine in 12 weeks, for HAL to deliver all their planes on schedule, for ticket less travellers to be banned from trains, for our streets to be garbage free in 2 weeks, and for our air and water to be clean in 4 weeks.
Not only this stray dogs issue, which is a welcome move by the court, but they should also implement laws about making dog owners responsible and punishable if their dogs hurt someone.
Maybe ban on import and sale of dogs would make a big change, but it won’t be possible to implement at all. So atleast, maybe every state can start taking stray dogs issue seriously.
This is a very impractical judgement.
- Dogs are territorial i.e. remove them from one area and dogs from nearby areas move in to the freed up area and multiply. At the pace the govt. gets anything done, as they move dogs from each area the original zones would end up getting new strays. The end result is a city AND a shelter full of dogs.
- Other countries have tried relocation or culling and failed. The only tried and tested method is being consistent with ABC(animal birth control). Doing this on a ad-hoc basis defeats the purpose.
- I myself have adopted three strays from the neighbourhood and would love to take in more if I could.
- I leave you with this quote from Steve Irwin: “If an animal kills me, its my fault not theirs.”
Barking dogs rarely bite. Beyond that, when there are issues, municipality has to understand them and manage. If that fails, people go against all dogs.
We have loads of stray dogs in my area, and they bark many times too often in groups. Never had an issue. What i instead saw was that a guy who was ( genuinely) afraid of dogs got some of them removed, 1 one them atleast was very gentle. Not saying its not possible, but its easy to just label them all.
This is like saying that men can be rapists, can be evil, some even against children. So chop off everyone. Same as foreigners calling all indians rapists. Same level of idiotness and hatred.
Here in Mumbai, they have banned feeding pigeons. Granted, its a problem if done in a very concentrated way, or even around roads but instead of finding reasonable solutions they do this.
As i said, being cruel is almost natural to humans. Short term cruel fixes will be preferred vs long term solutions. Small daily inconveniences, sometimes major issues can be used to do enormous damage.
Same mentality can be used against other humans too when convenient by categorizing them into groups. Eventually you start looking at them as sub humans, and then its easier to rationalize. Probably whats happened to israel.
Generally i don’t like people, and i am frequently reminded on why.
Dogs are better in every way. Unconditional Love and loyalty. That’s all
