AMD prepares GFX onslaught against Nvidia

Desktop

Well, April 6 is the date and many people here must be aware of it. On April 6, in all probability, we will get:

RV 790XT @ $299

RV 790Pro @ $199

RV 740XT @ $119

RV 740Pro @ $99 (probably the same card that was [p]reviewed by Guru 3D)

[Rumor] Radeon HD 4890 (RV790) & HD 4770 (RV740) Launch On Apr 6th - VR-Zone.com: News and Reviews

It is expected that RV 790XT will go up against GTX285 and match it at a lower price point. 790Pro will dilute advantage of GTX 260 (216). 4870 1GB as well as 512 MB will come down in price point and will take on 250GTS and its many avatars.

RV 740 will spell end of 9800 GT (Aka good old 8800GT) and 9600GT. It will have a few variants which will populate prices points from $90 to $130.

HD 4850 and HD 4830 will be told to take leave from the battlefield and 4670 will linger on for a while at $60 price point just to wipe floors with Nvidia’s lower end.

For now it seems, Nvidia will have no answer to AMD’s new cards if AMD meets expectations. At least not till GT 214 arrives after May. So expect a price war

Laptop

But desktop is not the only place where AMD is making moves. After suffering quietly in mobile/laptop arena, it is preparing a number of cards for those who like to game on Laptops. 55nm 4850M is already out in the wild. And it is slapping 9600GT (mobile) silly. For more see: HEXUS.net - Review :: MSI GT725 notebook: gaming power to go? : Page - 1/9 Add to that 4870 X2 (mobile) that is the fastest performing mobile GPU right now. (20k 3DMark 06 with a Asus W90 notebook - XtremeSystems Forums) and (Asus W90 - Radeon HD 4870 X2 v notebooku: Strana 1 - PCTuning)

But the real treat for Nvidia is going to be 40nm mobile chips. 4860 should definitely end up faster than 4850 (mobile) (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4860 performance preview (video)) and that will put it ahead of 9800M GTX and 9800M GT. 4830 (mobile) is, on the other hand, expected to rein supreme in mainstream market and finish 9600M GT for good

Whoa… AMD on rampage. I like their HW guys, only if the software guys could do something about upping the ante with their drivers. :face_with_tongue:

But seriously, nVidia is been in tight spot (specifically in midrange market) and looks like is going to be for some time. These 40nm parts and price onslaught is going to take big bite at nVidia.

As for AMD/ATi laptop parts… I say, Fine-f##king-nally. I just bought new unibody macbook with nVidia 9400M graphic… but I would have REALLY loved to have ATi graphic in my macbook. Traditionally, ATi parts are much better performers in Core-Image/Quartz-Extreme under OS X. Anyone worth their salt will remember 8800GT vs. HD3870 on Windows, where 8800GT have slight edge over HD3870 and more in AA performance… but try the same cards under OS X in pro apps, and 3870 wipes the floor clean with 8800GT. Just imagine what HD4000 serious would do on OS X.

That reminds me… uh Morgoth, this :

^^ now come on… i was just seconds late in proofing the text :ashamed:… BTW wife for wipe is fu**ing hilarious :face_with_tongue:

LOL yeah, have to agree with you mate… it really was hilarious.

Lets stick to the topic … AMD is come back real strong after suffering with the x200 and x300(some extent) series.

Once the driver division is polished it will … I wanted to say that AMD will reign supreme but the truth is that there are many markets where Nvidia is blindly purchased purely because of the brand name.

But still ATI has recovered mighty .. n ppl today are able to purchase 1Terflop for $150…so thank you AMD

It would have been better as flooring the wife rather than wifing the floor :face_with_tongue:

On Topic, AMD does seem to be doing well. And with times like these, impact may be bigger for Nvidia…

lol

^^ROFL

40 nm seems to be late tho, if samples of the RV740 were out in jan it looks like they needed a respin as well. And there isnt even the slighest hint of Nvidia’s 40 nm lineup

wow! love it. ATI has this nasty habit of launching too many Gpu’s into their lineup, remeber X1950XTX/X1950 256MB/1950CF/1650Pro/1300XT/ launch.

go AMD go..

Great Info!! This makes my decision even stronger to invest in a 790GX.
Live on its HD3300 for a while and when all dust and prices have settelled for these beautiful new line up invest in one of these. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
