AMD puts 5 TFlops in your PC

We are at the beginning of a week with plenty of supercomputing announcements, most of which target high-end and enterprise computing, but some in fact have mainstream appeal. AMD’s ATI division, for example, unveiled its Firestream 9250 card, based on the upcoming RV770 GPU, which will be part of the 4800 series of graphics cards. According to AMD, the new GPU can deliver out more than 1 TFlops – a performance that would have required 5000 Pentium Pro processors 12 years ago.

AMD kicks off this week, with the announcement of the 9250 card, without providing lots of details and not even an availability date. But besides the name of this card, it is interesting to note that the card is rated at more than 1 TFlops of performance and a power consumption of about 170 watts. Compared to the current 9170 model power consumption is up from 150 watts, but the performance has more than doubled from 500 GFlops.

Since the 9250 has a RV770 core, future owners of 4800-series cards will also be able to squeeze that performance also out of their graphics boards. The ATI team declined to say how much more than 1 TFlops the card can hit, but we were told that a 4x Crossfire X configuration is good for almost 5 TFlops. So, we would be tempted to assume that ATI is playing with a number of about a theoretically possible 1.2 TFlops per RV770 GPU.

And yes, the R700 - the dual-GPU 4870 X2 card – is good for almost twice that performance: According to AMD, the R700 will deliver 2 TFlops per board.

“Teraflops” does not mean a lot to most of us and floating pointing performance has not (yet) become a critical performance description for mainstream computing. But to put that number into perspective, consider the fact that 5000 Pentium Pro processors delivered 1 TFlops back in 1996. To match the 1.2 TFlops, you would need 6000 of these CPUs and to match the (32-bit) floating point performance of a quad-Crossfire system you would need 25,000 of these processors.

Though these are highly theoretical numbers and the actual performance always depends on a specific application, there is no doubt that today’s graphics cards are sleeping performance monsters. We wonder who will wake them up.

Thats like apples to oranges!

There’s a reason GPUs haven’t replaced CPUs. GPUs are like F1 cars, great for a specialised task but no good for general use. Also comparisons based on FLOPS alone are no point unless all you do are calculations

And about the nV camp, heard of Tesla ? ATI may have orchestrated the whole GPGPU movement, but nV certainly aren’t sitting idle and have made a more marketable approach to it. FWIW, quite a few supercomputers have been hashed together using a couple of PS3s .. I hope you know who makes the GPUs in them

There are also other things thats not clear,these figures are likely to be peak numbers.

Since these cores are evolution of r600,its more than likely they cannot sustain it.

On the other hand i should think nv cores should be able to sustain closer to the peak than ati cores.

What is nVIDIA doing?.. yaa man they r enjoying the markets with only presenting old Architecture in little different way but promising the performanc(superb business stratigy if seen through business mind) on other hand, what the A(MDTI) is doing nothing but making their day to day living which i think is going worst day by day..planning the new architecture, making they feel good on paper performance, lowering its costs to deadline and making the day living.. huuuu..:ashamed:

If you are familiar with r600 architecture,you should already have noticed the problem with it.Its inability to keep its processing units busy all the time.
Only in limited no of cases it can keep all of its 4+1 units busy,only in that case you get the max throughput.Not to mention how harder can it be to optimize for the VLIW architecture.
On the other hand,nv cores are simpler scalar units (at elevated frequencies which partially makes up for lower no of units) ,which are easy to be fed and kept under utilization without much pain.Hence my conjecture.

Yes u r right.. these are two different things..i also wanted to convey this here..
moreover nVIDIA plans different stratigy for use of their CUDA enabled gpu’s in folding@home. they r planning to paticipate in it by allowing their CUDA ready GPUs to participate in it.. and the number is aproximately.. 70 million GPU’s in the market which are unused for this purpose..
The aproximate number which is unused is 7000 Petaflops.. . nVIDIA is now using pure computational performance in better efficient way and wants enduser to participate in it.. while A(MDTI) is only increasing their flops without being serious about it live use..
A(MDTI) is with folding from a long time but didn’t perform outstanding by producing superb ideas like what nNVIDIA have now produced..

my dear friend, i think you have woken up from a bad sleep without knowing what this article is all about.. let me clear your thoughts.. first, this article is not about gaming performance for which you can blame ATI or any business related strategy that you have mentioned in my reply.. before blaming AMD for lacking thier guts in CPU, i think u first get ur facts right, its a fruit of ATI’s research & not from AMD cpu side, blaming AMD for it does not make any sense..

calling ATI’s architecture a BS, i do agree, there are there are some drawbacks to AMD’s implementation in R600. but all that have been fixed in RV770..
this article is only related to super Computing power of new ATI FIRESTREAM 9250 card, silmilar to that of NVIDIA’s TESLA line & yes as arnold righty
said, teraflops does matter in computing & not in gaming. Nvidia’s flagship GTX280, lost teraflops race by 67 Gflops, & that is why i qoute
" they are scraching their heads" & how can you call FireStream BS, as it has not yet launched & no one has seen its performance or even its derivatues HD4800..

not you can’t run crysis or any other game On fIRESTREAM, these cards are GPU derivative designed for calculations, no doubt graphic require calculations but atleast don’t expect this from computing cards, as they also lack video output..

^Firestream is a stream processor - like Cell - not a GPU - AFAIK its designed for parallel processing. so …

afaik the first few benches were on some financial number crunching app

This time new 9250 supports video output & can also work in tandem with the main CPU to accelerate complex calculations. unlike was the case of its 9170 predecessor..

My recent posts are being deleted by moderators coz they think they flame bait and pised the ATI fan…ok boys u keep on studing this ATI fan stupid lectures and keep increasing ur knowledge abt it… It doesnt make sense to to search in4mation from web and post it here and sat u r a real man.. hhaa haaa … guys be like real man and start sharing what u have learnd urself from technology…i am not sayin it to all members. but only to few who have submitted hundernd of threads on grasping information from web and posting here to shw they are some one…u better make this community name a “mimicry” of websites… i only see some useful guys who qote their real tough problems of their hardware and software.. and other only showing they r sumone and can google well..
