Apple’s new M5 MacBook Pro SSD is up to 211% faster than the SSD inside the M4 MacBook Pro

Apple’s new M5 MacBook Pro has up to 211% faster SSD performance than the M4 MacBook Pro, with 6.3GB/sec reads on the M5 versus 2GB/sec reads on the M4.

TL;DR: Apple’s new M5 MacBook Pro delivers up to 211% faster SSD read speeds and 84% faster write speeds compared to the M4 model, reaching 6.3GB/sec read and 6.0GB/sec write. However, both models share a single-fan design causing high chip temperatures near 99°C under load.

Yes. I saw a video on comparison too. Amazing speed of the SSD.

I think just upgrading for SSD for some( heavy user) can be worth it.

Sequential read/write speeds are not a true measurement of speed in any system. A sustained performance on heavy loads, gaming, video editing, random IOPs etc.. will determine the actual performance.
Also, Higher speeds ssds tends to run hot, thermal performance will determine if it can handle workloads or not. If not managed correctly, this could even render the macs unusable if the wear and tear on drive exceeds a certain threshold fast without thermal management. As Macs will loose the abilitity to even boot once the drive fails.

Probably switched to SMI SM2508 Controller and Toshiba 218-Layer TLC (BiCS8) just like the Kingston Fury G5 and WD SN8100. This is the best combo available right now - runs fast and cool.

Mostly likely the SSD itself will have some sort of thermal control circuit, will bring its speeds down on it’s own, to save itself.

All sdd have a thermal throttling point crossing which the ssd throttles its performance. It is still not good for the ssd health in long term so should be used only as a last resort/rare situations.

External buildup of temperatures during sustained loads, will make it thermal throttle.
PCIE ssds need external heatsinks to survive long working hours. Not everyone will be able to mod their macbooks. Macs are not designed for users to be able to change stuff in there,
