Basic Home Office Printer recommendations

Hey folks,

I need a printer for our home office which will be used once in a blue moon if that, I dont need any color printing capabilities, or anything else, it just needs to print a4 and a5 paper sizes.

Are there any recommendations?

no budget as such but would prefer to spend as less as possible. Only QoL feature I would love to have is wireless support and if maybe it could be small in size.

surprisingly enough, Hp seems to be the cheapest (I know they’ll loot us in ink, but we will at max be printing 10-20 pages/month)

I’m thinking of getting between one of these

  1. HP Deskjet 2820 WiFi Colour Printer - Print/Scan/Copy Ideal for Home, White : Amazon.in: Computers & Accessories

  2. Amazon.in: Buy HP Ink Advantage 4278 WiFi Colour Printer - Print/Scan/Copy with ADF Ideal for Home/Small Office, White Online at Low Prices in India | HP Reviews & Ratings

This deal also looks good with bundled ink Amazon.in: Buy HP Ink Advantage Ultra 4929 Colour USB Print, Copy, Scan, Self Reset WiFi, Smart App Setup, Print Per Page Cost Starting at 44Paise/Page with 2 Additional Sets of Inks, Ideal for Home, White Online at Low Prices in India | HP Reviews & Ratings

The most important feature on printer other than printing is scanner and LAN port.

You don’t want the wireless capabilities of the printer itself. You just need LAN port, so you can hook it up to your router and all devices on the network will be able to use it.

Look for brother laser printer recommendations in the other threads.

Connecting printer to router wirelessly is also easy but it doesn’t work reliably as compared to ethernet.

those are way out of our budget unfortunately, I did go through the reccs, and ideally I would prefer lan but wifi will also work, as long as there’s some form of connectivity.

Laser printer. But double the cost initially. But will save money in long term.

All your printers are ink jet i think. The ink probably has some shelf life.

On laser printer no such thing.

no networking on this, and yeah ink life is definitely an issue but we already have a full blown laser printer at our office, this is for once in a blue moon type situations where we might need to print something at home. Hence, I’m not really willing to spend more on it.

Those cartridge type printers dry up and get clogged if not printed frequently. Inside the cartridge is just sponge and ink.

Buy the Brother HL-2321D laser printer and combine that with a Raspberry Pi running CUPS to make the printer wireless.

Follow the following guide to make printer wireless (RIP to Don)-

You can search Brother HL-2321D posts that I have made. Im using that since Jan 2019. Recently purchased a second one. Its really great if you just need black and white text print.
You will find lot of other details too in those posts, including what toner to buy, the double capacity toner, toner and drum reset codes etc. Its the best around 10k. You can add a small SBC to use cups to print. Someone linked that in a video above. Its mostly pretty simple-ish if you can follow a tutorial.
If you have any questions you can ask me here or DM.

If you want colour printers then you can get the brother ones in the 15-20k range, no option but to use original ink.
