AMD Phenom II X2 550 is EOL now, AMD stopped making this model. it has been replaced by Athlon II X4 620. same price point
if you want PII X2 550, some dealers might have old stock still left with them. try your luck;)

IMO, this is the perfect budget. After this point, the return on your money spent start to diminish. This is the sweet spot.
I swapped the AMD X3 out for an Intel dual core as I felt the HD 4870 would benefit from the better single threaded performance.

What do you guys think?
try athlon II x3 ..u can unlock cache or cores
I Completely agree with you, If overcloked an Intel E5200(3K)+ Gigabyte G31(2.3k) Total 5.5 K eaisly exceed in performance then AMD Combo suggested here, I Got the same yesterday and running it overclocked at 3.8Ghz with stock Intel Cooler.
Amd is better value at entry level where you plan to go with out a discerte graphic card or plan to buy it later, but if you are already buying a graphic card i suggest stick with intel combo which can save you lots of money which you can invest in a better graphic card that will ensure better gaming performance.
