Corrupted display after working for sometime in Win XP SP2

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 on a Athlon64 3000+, Asus A8N-VM motherboard, 1GB (512x2) RAM & 500W powersafe psu system. My compueter started giving some problems since Monday afternoon. After using the comp for 30-40 mins, it would start getting sluggish and the display starts getting corrupted. Icons starts getting black or dissapear, the text below the desktop icons would dissapear; when I mininmise a window, half of it would get stuck on the screen. I would have difficulty in closing running programes and I would get error or low on system resources messages. Pretty soon, I would get a white screen with a corrupted taskbar on top rather than at the bottom. The alt-ctrl-del shortcut would not work and I’ll have to manually shut down/restart the comp.

I first increase the desktop heap memory but that didn’t work. Then this morning, I ran memdoctor and completed 10 pass with the following result:

Wall Time: 4:33:40
Cached: 959M
Revd Mem: 1336K
MemMap: e820-Std
Cache: On
ECC: Off
Test: Std
Pass: 11
Errors: 0

Then I did a system restore to about 48 hrs before the problem first occured without any luck. After that, I updated NAV 2006 and started a full system scan. I tried 3 times and everytime the scanning stops with a partially corrupted NAV resukt display after it has scanned arouund 860 active memory & startup files. It didn’t find any virus. Then I ran winxp in safe mode and started a full NAV scan. It managed to get past the active memory and startup files and was scanning C drive & when I checked after 1 hour, the scanning had prematurely ended with norton finding 3 viruses. Norton result display was partially corrupted. I deleted those viruses and started winxp in normal mode but the corrupted display returned after norton had again scanned 850 active memory & startup files.

I rescanned with NAV under safe mode and this time the computer froze with corrupted display after it had scanned 923 files.

Please advice on how to proceed further. Thx.

I am attaching my hijackthis log.

from your symptoms it looks like either heat issue or psu issue.

IMHO : take a look at your systems ventilation aspect thoroughly, also clean the dust accumulated over components, and if possible reapply thermal paste.

check the system with your side case open

still the issue persists and then look out for problems with psu. there are experts on TE who can address this issue better.

now to your log file :

run hijack this and do a system scan only
then select all the above entries and click on fix.

now some OT suggestions :
you are using Flashget, Norton Internet Security also clubbed with ZA firewall.

using two firewalls is not advisable.
Norton is a piece of crap software almost every one on this forum will vouch for it. please ditch it. also it may leave a few traces of it behind so google for RNAV and RNIS utilities to remove completely.

i have read opinions about flashget also causing problems, i also myself experienced it. remove it and use Free download manager (even a TE specific version is available )
you seem to be using yahoo toolbar if not extensively using it remove it also.

My suggestions : AVG for antivirus, many firewalls are available you can select your own choice ZA is not bad, FDM for downloading, Adaware SE + Spy Bot S and D + Spyware blaster for antimalware antispyware protection.

hope this much helps.

I use speedfan to check the temperature and the psu, cpu, motherboard and HDD temperature seems fine. Could be a psu issue. I will look into the ventilation aspect. Thx for the tips  .

I don’t know why hijack this shows that I have installed norton internet security and yahoo toolbar as I have never installed these softwares.

yahoo toolbar may be installed with yahoo messenger when you click in a jaffe. you can get rid of it.

in control panel . add/remove programs whether Norton is mentioned or not?

if not then as i mentioned run RNAV and RNIS softwares and remove the traces of it. You need to do this even if you uninstall from control panel.

Just thinking:

Check your RAM with Mem Test

I scanned the RAM with memtest for 1 hr and no errors were found. On Thursday evening, I managed to run my computer for 5 hrs before the graphics corruption came. Ditto for Friday evening. In between the corruption came after using the comp for 2 hrs. Apart from other things, I burnt a DVD and converted 2 vob files of 250 MB to avi without any problems during this period. Also, the computer restarted twice when I was trying to close the error messages windows. Apart from the graphics corruption, I get a low system resources messages and azureus gives a disk write error/out of space messages.

Yesterday night, I cleaned the inside of my computer and left the cabinet open and I managed to run the computer for 7hrs and 30mins before the errors occurred. Ditto for this afternoon. But when I tried to backup and clean my registry with jv16 powertools 2006, the problem occurred within minutes. Does this indicate a faulty PSU or corrupted windows system files or a virus?

Yesterday, after I used jv16 powertools to clean my registry (without success, since it froze); my comp will restart everytime I connect to the internet. Did system restore and was successful once but the problem reoccurred. I tried again just now for the first time this morning and managed to connect to the net without the comp restarting.

I formated my C drive a few days back and reinstalled Windows XP and now everything is working perfectly.

Great! Enjoy it!
