Well, I just got out of a similar situation. Messed up my disk during partitioning and my file structure was screwed. Data was present in the disk but Windows couldn’t see it.
I used this app called Ontrack Datarecovery. Awesome proggie. Recovered all my data

BTW i recommend not to use that partition till you attempt recovery best would be not to use that hdd altogether.

+1 for GetDataBack for FAT/NTFS…i have used both and can say that they do a very good job though the process takes substantial amount of time.
you can look for some popular bootcd’s on the net ( size typically wud be less than 100mb) which contain these kinda data(or even partition) recovery softwares.
