DVD drive issues.

I just got a new Sony DRU 830A drive a few weeks back. And I know most of you are going to say I told you so :face_with_tongue:

But this drive is a POS, its read capabilities are so shitty, even if there is a single scratch on the dvd, the drive hangs the system to hard boot. And it fails to write any dvd’s at 16x, although its rated at 18x:hap5: I tried MB pro, and verbatim 16x discs, it says its writing at 16x but takes 10 mins to write 4.2 gb !!!

Worse part is that my Samsung divx player is able to read the dvd’s flawlessly, while this crap hangs everytime I insert a slightly scratched dvd. Also the preview function of windows makes matters worse, ie the thumbnails to watch videos, and its enabled by default, any idea on how to disable it ?

Piece of advice, buy what techead recommends only, and stay away from crappy Sony writers. :frowning: Hope u can help me in this issue though…

Have you tried burning with your drive on your friend’s system ?

^Sahil, check IDE cable.
And…I told you so :face_with_tongue:

10 minutes for a burn? Sounds like 8X, not 16X. Forget 18X.. will only burn at that speed to TY and MCC004/03Rg20 discs. You sure those Verbs are 16X?

Check DMA, update FW to SB03 from CDFreaks, they have a special version to fix the -R leadin issue with Sammy FWs.

Sahil - read this thread:

Hmm but what about the read capabilities of the drive, cant believe Sony picked such a shitty firmware…

^Bum drive then.
