Everyone keeps saying 16GB VRAM, but hardly anyone is on it?

I think it’ll be one more gen at max, next gen console leaks have already started, if I had to hazard a guess, by Q3 2027, we will see next gen console launches

Buy what you actually need , a 5060 is Good enough for hd games.

I money not a problem, buy whatever you want.

I have played with my 4070ti for a good amount, 1440p medium high setting, not a single game that I played ever stuttered or required more vram (warzone, overwatch, rdr, cyberpunk, dying light, RE, and many more)

Idk there might be some game which need more vram, but just play on high setting and save yourself the trouble to mandate 16gb vram usage… you can always easily circumvent the vram requirement by lowering the textures to high instead of ultra

Would 1080p also need / require 16GB vRAM? Cause I don’t think I will move to any of the higher resolutions.

No, 12GB VRAM is the minimum needed these days. But at 30-40k,you either get 8GB or 16GB VRAM GPUs, so better to get 9060XT 16GB over 5060 or 5060Ti 8GB any day for gaming.

PS5 sorts of has 10GB VRAM at least. Hence the reason why there are some games which struggle at 1080p with 8GB VRAM. Texture quality easily improves the visual fidelity by a lot.

Agreed for 1440p, but my old 7900GRE was powerful enough to push 4K in games like Ghost of Tsushima and GoW Ragnarok where VRAM usage was 13GB+ at maxed out textures. Hence the reason why 4070Ti was considered a poor value back then because of the VRAM.

Nvidia fixed it in 4070Ti Super.

could be, but I personally never felt any issues with 12gb, I never reached 12GB ever. Maybe thats because I prioritize more fps over quality so VRAM usage was never an issue, just stating my experience

And I know, that 4070ti is not even a budget card, tis amid tier card so 16GB should have been the norm from start, but I dont understand the craze for even budget gpu thats supposed to be 200-300 msrp USD , people still want 16GB on budget cards, like bro if u use 16gb vram on a budget card you will msot definitely not cross even 60fps on most games xD

32 gb is definitely needed for modern games ,16 gb can cause issues in few games(very few).

But with 32 gb being so cheap these days there is really no reason to not go for it.

Edit. Thought it was ram that was being discussed

he talking about VRAM not ram…. FM 2023 and F1 24 both run out of VRAM on my 3080 FE, not even max settings. 10GB is bare minimum for smooth experience ofc its also depends on what kind of games you play

I have a 3080 too havent had any issues so far ,in any games at 1440p ,i also use dlss quality in most games so that helps.

But i feel sooner rather than later i ll have to get a new gpu for vram. 3080 is still great at gaming ,almost too good at 1440p.

5060 with 12GB VRAM would have been great indeed but alas, we are stuck with either 8GB or 16GB options. So 16GB VRAM option is the obvious choice.

I know you’re talking about gaming but I do use my 20GB VRAM completely when playing around with LLMs. I would love to have more (32 / 48GB+).

As for gaming, the highest I’ve seen is around 11GB total utilization.

have you done anything that can’t be done with the free stuff from discord/telegram bots? Not being rude, just asking since I’m considering whether to spend extra money or not

Wrong thread?

Im rocking a 3060 12GB
1440p RDR2 works fine with medium to low settings

But mind you this game is like 6 years old now.

Games are getting more demanding day by day and the reason NVIDIA keeps getting away with these shady tactics of selling 8 gig card variants is because they wanna sell a card which will need replacing down the line so they still sell those variants
Their significant portion of 8gb sales are for prebuilts

I play on UW 1440p (3440x1440). Newer games like Mafia The Old Country eats up around 12.5 GB on my 5070Ti

Dead Space Remake at UW 4K (5120x2160) was eating up 14.7 GB

soon 16 gb will be low , but i still feel 16 gb can still last a good while, but it does feel like requeirements are increasing quick after a long time of 8 gb being the norm

GTA6 will decide, if 16GB is enough or not for the next 10 years.

If more than 8 GB cards were affordable, then more people would move to it. The share of people with more than 8 GB has been consistently going up since the release of RTX 3060 12 GB. 3 years ago, only 5% people had 12 GB cards, now it’s up to almost 20%.

People don’t buy GPUs based solely on what is required today. They also want to run games that will release 3 years from now. So people want to have the choice to buy more VRAM.

I own a Quest 3 and the 16GB VRAM is more than needed in my case.
I have been actively looking to score a 24gb 7900X or an XT lately.
Every gigabyte of VRAM adds to how much degree of freedom I can look around without the screen looking choppy.

Upgraded from a 10GB 3080 to a 6800XT I bought here on TE.
On my 3080 doing a 180degree left to right head turn would make me see quadrants of screens. Not there on the 6800XT, granted that the FPS is lower on the 6800xt but the texture load time is much faster.

So I’m guessing if VR ever becomes more mainstream, which I doubt it will, more VRAM cards will be a neccessity. In the future when NPUs run AI instead of CUDA, VRAMs are gonna be dirt cheap (hopefully)
