I want to buy a new tab 8.0 inches as i already have a 10 inch one and it feels heavy for long periods of reading. Also the 7 inch is too small for me.
So i have boiled it down to the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 ( 3g edition as i want messaging on the go) and the Galaxy Note 8.0. The question i had in mind is, is the note 8.0 worth the extra 6k over theTab 3? I dont need super horse power as i just intend to use it for reading papers and some light browsing and messaging.
The device should last me for two years after which i will switch.
i had your confusion sometime back.
but it all clears out when you know what you require.
as per what you stated, seems reading and browsing will make the tab 3 more than sufficient.
go for the note 8.0 only if you plan to use the S pen for creative works or note taking.
the pen does come handy for few apps and quite precise with handwriting recognition.
i dont have any such need for a stylus cause i dont plan on taking notes on my tab and i am not so much into drawing as such. So the tab3 will be good right?? @ariendj what did you get finally??
i got the note 8.0 since i needed note taking function.
also considered it to keep my creative side working in between.
the tab 3 has pretty much same features of note 8.0 but with a lower processor.
but you will get a better battery life out of the tab 3 compared to latter.
HP touchpad. The tab is currently on CM10 and it is very very smooth and i can do all the things i want! However 740g on one hand is strenuous when i read for say an hour or so! The galaxy tab 3 8.0 is less than half the touchpad’s weight!
My note10.1 weighs that much with the case on. I don’t hold it in my hand it rests on my lap, propped up with a cushion. This means you read in one position only or at least i found that works best. If you want to read in other positions then a smaller screen is required. Or if you move around and need to read.
But a smaller screen creates its own issues, if your reading material isn’t too random, then you might just get away with it. 8 inch here just might be better than a 7 incher. Suppose its a happy compromise.
Yeah its not random reading though but this tab is significantly lighter and the screen is just brilliant! Loving every inch of it! i wouldnt call it a compromise though cause this tab suits my needs!
Well, you halved the weight so it should be very noticeable.
I said compromise because you traded in a bigger screen for a smaller one. One thing I notice is you would have been reading a 9.7 in portrait mode whereas a 10.1 with a 5% smaller screen is read in landscape. I think ergonomics in landscape is little bit easier in the sense your hands are further apart in a more natural manner. Can’t hold it though. Has to be resting on something. Whereas with 9.7 inch there is a tendency to use just one hand and it becomes unwieldy.
How has the adjustment been going from 9.7 to 8 inches ? Do you still read in portrait with it also.
Yup still reading in portrait! The reading experience is pleasant and i read for a stretch of 4 hours today and it did not seem to me like i am holding anything heavy! Plus the reading mode on this tab helps the display to adjust itself for a very comfortable session.
After insisting on this when i got my tab, i don’t feel the 3g is that important anymore. Its nice to have but not essential. A backup in case your phone stops working for any reason.
Hotspot with your phone should be good enough. Your L9 has a replaceable battery anyway so a spare should cover it.
@blr_p i already got the 3g edition so no use crying over split milk now
plus i am actually enjoying the portability cause i don’t need to depend on my phone’s internet!
i have two numbers but my cell phone is the primary one for calling and texting! The tab sim is mainly used for internet surfing and facebook and such things
Right, so doesn’t that work out more expensive than just one number + hotspot as you have an extra rental to pay each month. Also you won’t have the tab with you as often as the L9, what if you wanted to do a quick browse on the move ?
Course you have dual sim now if you wanted it.
See, i’m really having trouble justifying a 3G facility on a tab.
No phone around or a phone without hotspot capability, then yes.
If the user can afford it , then certainly 3g option is preferable as for some reason if your wifi goes bonkers one day, you can rely on the sim for the time being. I could not justify the 9k extra for 3g on my ipad mini and hence did not buy it . However, if the price difference were 3k, i would have certainly gone for it.
