Google confirms “high-friction” sideloading flow coming to Android

Google is preparing a new high friction sideloading process for Android that adds extra prompts and warnings when users install apps from outside the Google Play Store. This change is being developed to make sure users understand the risks linked to sideloading unverified apps, such as malware or scams.
According to Google representatives, the aim is not to block sideloading entirely, but to introduce an Accountability Layer that ensures users are clearly informed before bypassing safety checks. Advanced users will still have an option to Install without verifying, but it will involve extra steps and warnings. The high friction flow is intended to make sideloading less seamless by default and emphasise potential security threats, while preserving user choice.

This has been on the cards… What coefficient of friction are they looking at?

As long as there’s a way, combine it with muscle memory and μ will always tend towards zero.

waiting for someone to create an app which once sideloaded would no longer need sideloading of any other app

Better be a setting you can toggle so it doesn’t annoy you every time

This is already happening. Beyond just causing friction with the workaround, it completely prevents the some side loaded apps from running.

It also appears when a “sideloaded” (or installed) app is not from playstore, and redirected to receive update from play.

Not allowing to launch is diabolical. Sign me up for a class action suit if widespread.

Personally not, prob will not experience ever on GOS, Hardened EOL funtouch
