Hair care for 40+ men

I’m looking for some hair care products like oil/gel/medicines but vfm and home based to delay or counter hair greying, hair loss, preserve thickness or reverse hair thinning etc.

What all products like shampoos, gels, or even oral tablets etc you guys take to control the above factors.

There has always been a debate on the basic coconut oil vs countless costly products vs diet and lifestyle etc.

Hi, back again

First i could reccomend a blood test to check your vitamins and mineral level(iron,b12, d3,zinc and copper, maybe thyroid), then your genetics (ask parents or grand parents about thier hair loss or balding age if any, and thier hair thickness and greying age).

Im not a doctor, consult one if you have an illness or something you feel isnt nomal

These 2 would be the biggest thing to check and most common.

Next is dont wash your hair (or even wet) for a day and just touch your scalp and feel if its oily or dry, if it has flakes(white colour) or dandruff (yellowish) as both have different solutions.

Things to avoid:

Dont use Hair dryer at hot temps, hair drying is fine if using cold or normal air but never hot, itll be harder to dry without the heat but the heat damages tiur hair alot.

Dont do anything that pulls hair alot, friction is problematic but keep this at bottom as its not major. This includes using a towel and drying your hair by vigorously rubbing it (i hope you imagined what i meant) like normally done. Hair is weak when wet and so its unsafe to cause it harm, dry to with a cold or normal hair/blow dryer then comb, itll also make hair look better.

Oil/shampoo/conditioner/mask etc are smth you dont need to worry much about in comparison to what all i listed above, you can worry about it later. But do make sure ti use conditioner (only on hair not scalp) after shampoo as that is important or else hair becomes much dryer

Different oils have different purposes, people say dont apply oil when u have dandruff, but thats vague. Oils like cocount ofc increase dandruff, but oils like squalane or mct dont as they dont have thr fats dandruff feeds on. Also not everything thay falls from your head is dandruff. It can be dryness. White flakes are formed when hair is too dry and rhrh look like dandruff but just white instead or yellowish, coconut oil is good for them. Its really moisturizing.

Water is important for every type of care you can think of.

I think this much is enough for now, which shampoo, conditioner or oil is much less important than these.

Sadly, someone else’s hair may respond differently to the same products.

I experimented a lot since I have wavy shoulder length hair, I really wanted to like Herbal Essence stuff since they looked so cool.

But what works best for me is Dove. Both shampoo and conditioner. Anything by Dove. It was kind of disappointing but the results are undeniable.

Thick, soft, flowing hair that makes me feel like a Disney princess twice a week.

Biotin supplements help a lot too. Shinier nails, a boost in hair growth everywhere. Take sparingly for that reason.

You cannot control aging, diet + lifestyle will help improve alongwith herbal oils..
I avoid cosmetics at all costs..

Who are these 40+ men?

Eat dry fruits, nuts and seeds regularly. Having green tea also helps deal with DHT and other issues.

For Shampoo, use one without sulphates and parabens, and wash hair regularly to keep the scalp clean.

Don’t worry about it getting dry unless you are in a very dry area. Scalp can produce enough oil to keep itself moisturised.

Finally, quality peptide serums and minoxidil are the only proven solutions for improving hair quality through external application. Rest is all good diet, low stress which helps.

If you can get it done, do get hair PRP done after consulting a dermatologist. If you do get it done, make sure its done by someone who knows what they are doing, cuz it’s gotta be injected in a way to avoid hair root damage.

PRP takes atleast 6 months to show effect and its very effective

They are pushing salt and pepper in some films these days, you know. btw, what is the age of film heroes these days ?

Another question to add to OP’s, is there a way to avoid accelerating baldness after hitting gym ? Especially for 40+men…

There is no relation between two unless you are taking external steroids along with going to gym. Gym work hardly raises your natural steroid …

i think mental stress is prob main culprit in thinning hairs. hard to get that under control.

i try to be ayurvedic or natural product user as possible, so no shampoo, instead we use ritha in our home. in place of hair oil we use amla infused oil made at home. this help hair-fall in control very much.

another thing very effective is daily shirshasan practice to reduce hairfall .

If you are already bald then you can consider hair transplant. If only hair loss then minoxidil and finasteride combination works great. Last would be getting hair patch or wig. Don’t believe in all those hair regrowth serum crap they don’t work.

dont they have many side effects?

Slight side effects in some people. I’m using it as well had no side affects

orally or tropical? can you share your routine.?

I won’t be able to handle struggles associated with hair transplant due recent allergies. Minoxidil and finasteride side effects in long term is real bad.

Relationships exist through two pathways that I can think of right now.

  1. You are not eating enough protein: when you are “forcing” your body to build muscles in the absence of protein, your body is going to shut down or slow down nonessential processes like hair and skin rebuilding and libido (if you are past the age of 25).
  2. Male pattern baldness caused by increased DHT: You exercise. You’ve increased your testosterone, which is fantastic. Some of it is converted into the more potent form, DHT. If your genes are cursed, your hair follicles will be highly sensitive to DHT. This causes hair loss, particularly on the scalp, but DHT will also promote hair growth in other areas.

What you said entirely is my situation. I had abundant strong hair, that was the only presentability I had…:joy: But, exercise was needed to avoid calorie issues. I reduced my calorie intake drastically without knowing the consequences, heavy hair fall, semi-balding, my very thick hair strands turning thin, grey and wiry unruly hair was the result, happened 2-3yrs back.
Stopped exercise and started brisk walking, took supplements, no change in situation.

I don’t give a hoot about losing hair at all at this age, problem is everyone I know comments about this lost trademark of mine  and other around me make this an issue. In the end, the lazy me stopped caring about hair and everyone else… haha…

Let me give you a third pathway, which was more apt for your situation.

When you are cutting down, you essentially get overdosed on Vitamin A.

It’s a fat-soluble vitamin. When you cut fat, your body releases a lot of vitamin A into the bloodstream.

A side effect of Vitamin A overdose is hair fall. Both genders can face it, and one can fully recover hair once they have stopped the caloric deficiency.

Crash dieting (drastic caloric restriction) will also cause hair loss via the first pathway I mentioned. A crash diet can also disrupt thyroid function. This can also have an impact on the quality of your hair.
