HexOS- Any users? feedback?

Anyone here using HexOS? I bought it when it was on promo (sort of pre-booking) when it was first showcased on LTT. didn’t have a NAS then and thought this might give me a push. BUilt a system, installed HexOS but didnt like it. felt like there were no options at all so uninstalled and installed Truenas directly and have been pretty happy with it so far.

I wonder if I would install HexOS on any of the machines in future but also curious, how many people in India (specifically in thsi forum) bought it and/or are using it.

IMO, 199 usd is very pricey in Indian context that too just for a better and user friendly GUI for a FOSS.

With them sponsoring the development of zfs anyraid, I can see that their adoption will shoot up as they are targeting the exact pain point of homelabers. Though they have said that it will be open for all and not a feature of hex os.

Yeah, I bought it for 99 when it was early days. think it gave me enough push to build my NAS so I wont regret it even if I never end up using it. and on anyraid, think truenas guys have said that it will available in truenas so lets see.

Have you ever thought of buying unraid?

Unraid is quite taxing on the drives while rebuilding them again in case of a drive failure. As I have multiple old drives i don’t want to risk it and moreover zfs integration is not good on unraid. For data protection nothing can beat zfs file system.

Nope. 1st Nas, installed truenas and very happy with it. Was using docker apps initially but moved everything to separate proxmox machines now so don’t think I need too much from my Nas OS anymore. Feels like I will stick with truenas.

Do you use unraid? i haven’t heard any other advantages except being able to use mismatched drives on it but maybe I am just ignorant and admittedly, have never used it.

I don’t use it either but reading various comments on reddit it seems unraid is more popular among windows users building nas based on linux compared to typical linux users who seem to prefer trueNAS/zfs more.

I won’t call myself typical linux user but have moved windows on my primary machine to a vm on proxmox and my daily driver is now ubuntu so I guess it’s truenas for me

Also hear that zfs is better for data integrity so even though I don’t understand technicals, it helps me sleep better to know that my storage is on zfs (with multiple backups off course)

You are typical linux user, anybody who can run a VM on proxmox successfully is a typical linux user.

That is mostly related to inbuilt checksum & snapshot feature for stored data so helps against bitrot & user/software errors.
