How much do you 'DIY' around the house vs calling a professional?

Mr DIY in hyd is now open : https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMknobCBnDR/

It was too far from my house (roughly one and a half hour), and it seemed more like a regular shopping mall like More/DMart than a HomeDepot from the instagram reel .

So, while looking around in google maps, I found IBO https://www.ibo.com/ . It seems to exclusively focus on stuff for home. It had multiple branches, and I recently visited the one closest to me and I gotta say, it really felt like a HomeDepot. They had everything from handtools/powertools/sprays/paints/ to plywood/glass/pipes/taps/wires/cables/bulbs/water-tanks etc… with some extra fluff like household utensils (baskets/dustbins/etc.) or appliances.

AND they have daily delivery, so, you can order from their website and stuff will come to your house. I visited in-person yesterday to check it out and bought a stanley axe ( Amazon.in) for 500/- + random things like gloves. Here’s google maps link if anyone wants to see pics of the store: Google Maps

wow this is great news, I live very close to this lulu mall. Ill have a visit soon and let you guys know. Unfortunately store like Mr DIY setting up shop in a mall very clearly means the prices wont be great and not very accessible

nope. the prices are good for what they offer.

the store formats are just how they operate. don’t know if they have any franchisee or it’s all company owned.

All i can see is cheap Chinese rubbish from the insta video .

Mostly yeah and hence the recommendation for IBO instead (which actually has multiple branches all over the city). But at 00:21 (seconds) timestamp in the DIY insta reel, you can see DIY-branded handtools like screwdriver set / cutters / pliers / tape etc. It’s very very easy to miss, so I am posting a screenshot here.

We just need to wait until @manohar5321 visits the store and gives us a proper review  You can’t even find it on google maps yet, so there’s no way to get public pics/reviews of the interior.

I have shopped at multiple DIY stores in different cities and they sell the same stuff. The only difference is the store size and some inventory could be seasonal.

Like I said , I see Chinese shit .

Never buy sub par tools . Especially power tools . Always buy branded or know the risks before buying .

A cheap tool might cost a leg or a life . I have a good experience with various tools and near to fatal accident situations .

Drill bits , cutting tools , saws are high speed tools .

Branded tools like Bosch , Eastman , King tony , Hitachi , Dewalt , Makita are reliable .

Wow..Interesting.

Didn’t know such shops existed in hyd…

Though very far from my location, will definitely visit IBO once hyd rains/floods subsided.. Thanks for this info.

This is exactly what I need in Gurgaon :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey , I visited the store this afternoon and am quite disappointed. There is actually very little DIY material and more readymade stuff like girls rings, chains, bands, makeup stuff, and many stationary items. and stuff like water bottles, curtains, mats, kitchen items. This store looks like half a Dmart. There was hardly any unique stuff which we can’t get anywhere else. The prices were on par with other stores like Dmart, and Ratnadeep so not worth visiting also. It is 100% Chinese, I spent about 1 hour and didn’t find a single made in India item.

Where is this located in Hyd?

Inside the Lulu mall near KPHB

thanks for the review <3 Saved me a long trip and now, I’m glad to have found IBO chain so close to me. The name Mr.DIY is so confusing tbh, they should just call themselves C[hinese]-mart instead.

I have been to Mr. DIY shops multiple times. I was thrilled when I first saw it. I thought it was all made for a person just like me.

The illusion shattered quickly, though. Most of the stuff is chinese. Now, I don’t mind that on most days.

The problem is, everything is generic. We have countless quality brands, like 3M and Pedilite, in India, that do make quality stuff. The quality has been time-tested. Would you build your house furniture with adhesives from a generic brand you have never heard of, or will you use Fevicol?

This shop is meant for average IT engineers who don’t have any technical knowledge.

Last time, I went there to buy insulation foam spray. After the purchase I realized that the product didn’t come with the spray nozzle. It’s a standard accessory if you buy it from known brands like pedilite or abro. Without it, you actually can’t use it.

I asked for it. They didn’t know what it was. I had to show them the above image. They said they couldn’t help, as they don’t have it.

I asked for a refund. They refused.

I politely told the manager that I was going to punch him in the face if he didn’t refund. He said he couldn’t refund it, but I could take anything else from the shop of the similar value in exchange.

So I came home with a roti wicker basket, which looked like this:

:man_facepalming:

Now as I write this, I just realized I have been stupid and irresponsible with my threat.

I should have calmly and elegantly poked a hole in the foam bottle with a size 1 phillips screwdriver. The shop was full of screwdrivers after all.

so you chose and paid for the generic stuff?

Yeah. I wanted to give a fair chance to this brand. Foam insulation wasn’t something that I needed to be reliable. I was willing to take a chance.

So this foam thing, what do you use it for?

I’m thinking to use it for filling gaps in hole made on wall for ac pipe

Yes you can but POP is generally preferred and is a lot cheaper.

I got the foam spray to fill gaps in kitchen furniture.

But POP gets worse with rains isn’t it?

Yes. But POP is fine for indoor walls.
