What I want to know is how do I do the same with a desktop PC with a Wired Internet connection and no WiFI capabilities so that I can share my Internet connection with my laptop or any other device.
NOTE I AM USING VISTA 64 BIT OS SO PLEASE SUGGEST SOME USB ADAPTER THAT WORKS WITH VISTA 64
Additional Details
I dont have a free PCI slot so can I use this or any similar one that works with Vista 64bit
I think you want to be share your internet connection between your different computers / devices, and you currently using a wired internet connection connected to your PC.
why dont you just buy a wireless router? I think you might as well spend ~2k on a new wi fi router instead of ~800 on a wireless adapter and try to turn your pc into a hotspot.
I dont think your ISP is going to find out about you sharing your connection
In fact you could ask your ISP to provide you a wireless router, you might just have to pay them some rental and a deposit for it, they would take care of configuring it and setting it up for you.
Or even if you did end up buying a router by yourself it would be pretty simple to set up. Why dont you read up a bit about it on some other threads on TE or other forums
Assuming that you have a DSL modem for you internet connection-
Connect ethernet cable from modem to router
Decent routers usually have 4 ethernet ports. Connect PC1 to one of the ethernet ports
Laptop - assuming that it has wi-fi you can just connect to the router and share your internet connection, if your laptop doesnt have wi-fi, you just need to buy a wireless adapter for it.
Plus Netgear routers are dirt cheap and come with a config wizard. Sharing through adhoc is horribly buggy in Windows. I used to do it, when my Wireless router got fried.
If you do wanna share, use Mac OSX. Works brilliant through that. Used to do it through my iMac.
well no i don have a dsl modem
plus now i cant do anything as my onboard lan is giving probs…and cant troubleshoot
getting IP address but says Limited connectivity and doesnt allow me to use
on resetting adapter…works for hardly a min and again limited connectivity
plus as i said before no free pci slot
will be formatting my pc now and check..else will have to give the mobo to the service center
